On Friday, Jan. 30, the Lions Varsity Boys Soccer Team scored an impressive 6-0 victory over Floresville High School to remain undefeated at home. The win was the Varsity’s first District win since 2013, and the team’s third win of the season. The team kept Floresville on their heels most of the game, scoring three goals in the first half and three goals in the second half.

The highlight of the game was a three-goal hat-trick by sophomore Benito Bustos, who scored his first goal at 26 minutes of the first half and twice in the second half, at 24 and 40 minutes, to complete the scoring for the Lions.

Sophomore Jonathon Marin led off the scoring for the Lions at 21 minutes of the first half, and scored again at 36 minutes to give the Lions a 3-0 halftime lead. Junior Alexis Guerrero also scored for the Lions on a free kick at 4 minutes of the second half.

“This win is just a small step to where we want to be,” said Boys Head Coach David Ramos. “We will continue working hard to get better and better every game.”

On Tuesday, Jan. 27, the Lions traveled to Alamo Heights High School to take on one of the District’s top teams. The Lions defense played a courageous game against the Alamo Heights’ attacks to keep the score close before losing by a 0-4 score.

“I know the players went out there to play as hard as they can against a really good team,” Ramos said.

The Lions Varsity overall record for the season is now 3-4-1, and their record for the District season is 1-2-1.

JV Lions Soccer

On Friday, Jan. 30, the Lions Boys JV Soccer Team rolled to a powerful 8-0 victory over Floresville High School. The victory was the JV’s third win of the season. Four Lions scored two goals each, including juniors Juan Estrada and Edgar Llamas, and Freshmen Victor Gomez and Ramon Flores. Estrada led off the Lions scoring with a goal at 4 minutes of the first half. Llamas scored next at 15 minutes, followed quickly by Gomez’s goal at 17 minutes. Estrada completed the first half scoring with his second goal at 22 minutes to give the Lions a 4-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Llamas began the scoring with his second goal at 10 minutes, followed by Gomez’s second goal at 13 minutes. Freshmen Ramon Flores, playing in his first game of the season, scored twice at 17 and 27 minutes to complete the Lions scoring for their well-deserved 8-0 win.

“I could not be prouder of the JV team,” said JV Coach Dave Cich. “The whole team played well on both offense and defense keeping the pressure on the Floresville team throughout the game.”

On Tuesday, Jan. 27, the JV team played against a powerful Alamo Heights team. The team battled valiantly before losing by a score of 0-5.

“I was proud that the JV team never gave up despite the constant attacks by Alamo Heights,” Cich said. “I told the team after the game that to get better we had to play the best, and Alamo Heights is probably the best team we will face this year.”

The Lion JV’s overall record for the season is now 3-2-1, and their record for the District season is 2-1-1.

The Lion Soccer teams traveled to play Kerrville Tivy High School on Tuesday, Feb. 3, and will play San Antonio Kennedy High School at home on Friday, Feb. 6. Next week, they will travel to Boerne-Champion to face the Chargers on Monday, Feb. 9, before pulling the bye on Friday.
