Lions lose last home games to Unicorns

The Lockhart Lions fought hard for their baskets during the last home games of the season. All three teams did the very best they could to stay in the game. In the end, the Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshmen Lion teams all found themselves at the wrong end of a Unicorn horn at LHS gym on Friday, Feb. 9. The Varsity Lions lost by o

nly 10 points with a final score of 71-61. The Junior Varsity Lions lost by 19 points with a score of 47-28 and the Freshmen Lions lost by 36 points with a score of 69-33.

Varsity
The Varsity Lockhart Lions lost to the New Braunfels Unicorns in the first half of the game. The Unicorns came out in full gallop during the first two quarters. They hit the court hard and established a commanding lead and kept it throughout the night. The Lions were left trying to run down the Unicorns without much success.
By the end of the first quarter the Lions were trailing the Unicorns by half the points. The Lions earned seven points and let the Unicorns make 14 points. Scoring for the Lions in the first quarter were Brandon Hodges with a couple of two pointers and Alex Joseph with a two pointer and a free throw. The first quarter ended with a score of 14-7.
The second quarter went a bit faster than the first. It had more points but the same results. The Lions earned 16 more points while the Unicorns added 24 points to their game score. Scoring in the second quarter for the Lions were Terrance Waldon with three two pointers and a free throw, Hodges, Kerry Lampkin and Jonathan Gonzales each with a two-pointer and Joseph with a three pointer. The first half ended with a score of 38-23.
The second half of the game started with the same fast pace as was seen during the second quarter. The Lion’s scoring got better while the Unicorns seemed to be getting tired. The Lions added 17 points to their score and the Unicorns added 20 points to theirs leaving the score at 58-40 at the end of the third quarter. Scoring for the Lions in the third were Hodges with two three pointers and a free throw, Joseph with a three pointer, Lampkin with a two pointer and free throw and Waldon and Schulle with a two pointer each.
The fourth quarter was the only quarter where the Lions outscored the Unicorns. The Unicorns could only come up with 13 points while the Lions found the bucket 10 times for a total of 21 points. Scoring in the fourth came from Lampkin with three two pointers, Waldon and Hodges each made a three point shot, Gonzales and Schulle each made a two point shot and Jeremy Hill contributed a three pointer and two free throws. The game ended with a hard loss for the Lions and a final score of 61-71. The high scorers for the Varsity team were Hodges with 16 points, Waldon with 12 points, Lampkin with 11 points and Joseph with nine points. The rest of the points came from Hill who added five points and Gonzales and Schulle who each contributed four points to the game.

Junior Varsity
The Junior Varsity Lions had a low scoring first half. Both the JV Lions and JV Unicorns got off to a slow start out on the court. Neither team could find the basket until the second half of the game. As low as the scoring was, the Unicorns managed to edge out the Lions during all four quarters.
The first quarter was the lowest scoring quarter for both teams. The Lions were able to put only three points on the scoreboard for their team while the Unicorns doubled that score by putting six points on the board. The first quarter ended with a 6-3 score. The three Lion points came from a two points shot by Jeremiah Johnson and a free throw by Ryan Carrasco.
The second quarter was only slightly more exciting with another single digit score for the quarter. The Lions almost doubled their previous scoring with five points while the Unicorns barely beat their previous scoring by one point with seven points. Both teams seemed stunned at their inability to find the basket with their shots. The quarter and the first half of the game ended with a low 13-8 score. Scoring for the Lions in the second were Ricky Rodriguez with a three pointer and Kevin Haynes with a two pointer.
After the halftime break the Unicorns came out hungry and determined to improve their game while the Lions did their best to improve their scoring and finish the game a quarter at a time. The Lions added eight points to their game score while the Unicorns piled on 16 points to their game score. The third quarter ended with a score of 29-16. Scoring for the Lions in the third quarter were Gerald Cuellar with a couple of two pointers for a total of four points, Joseph Gonzales with a two pointer and Carrasco with two free throws.
The Lions were able to score in the double digits during the fourth quarter. They squeaked out 12 points while the Unicorns added a final 18 points to their score. It was as if both teams had finally warmed up and were ready to play. Unfortunately, like most kids at the arcade and almost all visiting senior citizens in Las Vegas, they were out of quarters. The game ended with a score of 47-28. Scoring in the fourth quarter for the Lions were Carrasco with three two pointers and a three pointer, Cuellar with a two point shot and Johnson with a free throw. The high scorer for the Junior Varsity team was Carrasco with a total of 12 points. Cuellar contributed six points. Johnson and Rodriguez each added three points to the game while Gonzales and Haynes added two points each.

Freshmen
The freshmen Lion team never had a chance. The freshmen Unicorns used every ounce of their mystical powers to subdue the freshmen Lions and they succeeded. The Lions were hit so hard during the first quarter of the game that it took the entire second quarter for them to regain their composure. By then, it was too late. The Unicorns stomped all over the Lions and the freshmen game ended with a score of 69-33.
The first quarter left the freshmen Lions stunned. They were able to put only seven points on the scoreboard and allowed the Unicorns to compile a total of 19 points. The quarter ended with a score of 19-7. Scoring for the Lions in the first quarter were Brian Martinez with a three pointer, Manuel Hernandez and Sergio Juarez with a two pointer each.
The second quarter was the toughest for the freshmen Lions. They were only able to score two points while the Unicorns piled on another 14 points for their team, bringing the score to 33-9 at the end of the first half. Scoring in the second came from Martinez and Juarez who contributed a free throw each.
The second half of the game was not any easier for the Lions. They came out fighting, but the Unicorns were relentless and, more importantly, consistent in their shooting. The Lions made six shots for a total of 10 points. The Unicorns made 10 shots for a total of 18 points. The third quarter ended with a score of 51-19. Scoring for the Lions were Martinez with a couple of two pointers, Hernandez and Joseph Gonzales with a two point shot each and D. Watkins with two free throws.
The fourth quarter had the Lions make the most points in a quarter with 14 points. The Unicorns repeated the third quarter total with another 18 points in the fourth. The quarter and the game ended with a score of 69-33. Scoring for the Lions were Martinez with a three pointer, a two pointer and two free throws for a total of seven points for the quarter, Hernandez with a three pointer and F. Tristan and Cody James with a two pointer each.
The high scorer for the game was Brain Martinez with 15 points. Manuel Hernandez made seven points, Sergio Juarez made three points and Tristan, James, Gonzales and Watkins each added two points to the game.
The Lions play one more basketball game away but soccer, softball and baseball are well underway so see you at the game.
