The Lockhart Lions’ varsity basketball team hosted the skilled Del Valle Cardinals on Friday, Jan. 28, only to be defeated for the second time by the Cardinals, 93-64, in the 26-4A District contest.
The Lions fought hard but came up short in the first half as Del Valle outscored them 25-11.
The Cardinals kept a steady pac

e against the Lions in the second quarter. They advanced their lead over Lockhart as their strong defense only allowed the Lions 11 points while gaining another 18 points on offense.
At the halftime break, the Lions suffered from a 21-point deficit with the Cardinals holding onto the 43-22 lead.
Lockhart wasn’t ready to give up the game as they came out aggressive in the third quarter. It was a high-scoring quarter for both teams as Lockhart gained 23 points and Del Valle gained 28.
Trailing by 26 points, the Lions still held strong and hustled to every loose ball in the fourth quarter. However, their efforts weren’t enough against the talented Del Valle team. The Cardinals walked away with the victory.
Lockhart proved that they weren’t the team to foul making 12 out of 14 free throws during the game. Five Lions completed 100 percent of their shots from the free-throw line. Mark Black made four free throws, Jacob Alvarez completed his one-in-one free throw, while Zachary Hill, Chris Hodges and Michael Schulle each made two at the line.
Scoring in the double digits for the Lions were Mark Black with 18 points and Garrett Shafer with 15 points.
Shafer also put pressure on the Cardinals’ offense by forcing turnovers with five steals.
Contributing to the rest of Lockhart’s 64 points were Michael Lewis with six points, Joseph Morgan with five points, Hill with five points, Alvarez with five points Michael Black with four points, Hodges with four points, Marshall Hill with three points and Michael Schulle with two points.
Lockhart will host the Taylor Ducks for their last home game on Friday, Feb. 4, for the “Senior Night” recognition at 8 p.m. For their last two district games, the Lions will be traveling to Pflugerville Hendrickson and Elgin on Feb. 8 and Feb. 15 respectively.
