Lions stumble at Hays Relays

The Varsity and JV Lions started Spring Break at the Hays Rebel Relays on Friday, March 11, and gave a strong, if not dominant performance.

The Varsity Lions amassed 84 points to post a fourth place finish. Dripping Springs dominated the day with 175 points, while district competitors Canyon, Lehman and Hays finished

second, third and fifth respectively.

Distance runner Robert Uhr led the Lions on the track, logging a second place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.14. Nate Moore finished sixth in the same race, with a time of 2:05.70.

Kevin Silva earned bronze in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.50 seconds.

Uhr placed fourth in the 1,600-meter run, completing the course with a time of 4:42.92.

Kyle Medina placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in 43.37.

Chris Jackson finished sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.27 seconds.

The 4×100-meter relay team of Dettrick Reed, Jackson, Juan Lopez and Joseph Bell placed fourth with a total time of 44:52 seconds.

In the 4×200-meter relay, Jackson teamed with Sebastian Lamas, Reed and Lopez to earn a fourth place finish in 1:36.68.

The Lions placed sixth in the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 3:50.87. That team was comprised of Medina, Brian Tumlinson, Lamas and Uhr.

On the field, Jordan Huckaby proved to be a leader for the Lions, striking gold in the shot put with a mark of 52’2”. He also placed third in the discus with a throw of 150’8.5”.

Bell earned silver in the discus, with a mark of 152’7.5”.

Reed struck gold in the high jump, making a mark of 5’8”, and then placed fourth in the triple jump, with a final mark of 40’1”.

Dillon Windham closed out the Lions’ scoring with a fourth place finish in the pole vault at 12’6”.

The JV Lions did not fare as well as their upperclass counterparts, earning only 21 points and placing seventh in the Rebel Relays.

Erik Moreno secured a bronze medal with an 11:30.36 time in the 3,200-meter run. It would be the only “medal” finish the Lions achieved in the meet.

The 4×200-meter relay team comprised of Abel Estrada, Jeremy Gonzales, CJ McKinney and Marcus Johnson placed sixth.

Estrada teamed with Abel Gonzales, McKinney and Moreno to place sixth in the 4×400-meter relay with a final time of 4:01.85.

On the field, Ryne Lehman earned a fourth place finish in the shot put with a distance of 33’5”.

Brandon Sanders also earned fourth, in the long jump, with a mark of 17’10”, while teammate McKinney placed sixth, just inches behind at 17’3.5”.

Charles Ereaux placed fifth in the pole vault, with a mark of 10’.

The Lions will compete in the Smithson Valley Relays on Friday, March 25, and then follow to the Canyon Cougar Relays on April 1, 2011, in preparation for the District Meet, which will be held at Canyon High School on April 8-9, 2011.
