Lions varsity triumphant over Taylor Ducks

The Lockhart Lions” varsity basketball team hosted the Taylor Ducks on Friday, Feb. 4, for a victorious game where they almost doubled their score over the Ducks, 84-45. The Lions are in the district running for third place against Hendrickson and Elgin.

The Ducks weren”t ready for the skilled Lockhart team as they allowed the Lions to gain a 22-12 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Lions held strong defensively as they only gave up eight points to Taylor. Offensively, Lockhart had their highest scoring quarter with 23 points, and increased their lead to 45-20 at the end of the first half.
After the halftime break, the Ducks came out strong scoring fifteen points in the third. However, the Lions stayed on the winning path by scoring another 18 points to give them a 63-35 advantage.
During the fourth quarter, Taylor seemed to lose steam, giving up 21 points to Lockhart and only gaining 10 points. The Lions just let the clock dwindled down until the final buzzer signaled their 84-45 victory.
Scoring in the double digits for Lockhart was Mark Black with 23 points including 88.9 percent from the free-throw line, Jacob Alvarez with 19 points including 77.8 percent from the free-throw line, and Garrett Shafer with 10 points including two three-pointers.
Also contributing points for the Lions was Chris Hodges with eight points, Marshall Hill with six points, Jonathan Sanders with six points, Michael Schulle with six points, Michael Lewis with five points and Zachary Hill with a free throw.
Defensively, the Lions improved by forcing turnovers with 17 steals and grabbed 29 defensive rebounds.
Taylor lost possession of the ball as Shafer made six steals, Hodges made three, while Mark Black and Sanders each made two.
Sanders, Alvarez and Marshall Hill each grabbed seven rebounds for Lockhart.
The Lions will travel to Elgin for their last district game against the Wildcats on Tuesday, Feb. 15.
