For Kyle resident Irma Glover, a large part of life has been governed by some form of cancer. Glover”s youngest son, John, now 20, was diagnosed with Hodgkin”s lymphoma at the age of 7. Her father was diagnosed with, and later died from, cancer. Glover herself was diagnosed with breast cancer twice, the first time in 2000 and

again in 2003.
Instead of giving in, however, Glover found a way to fight back.
“My dad was a golfer,” she said. “A few years ago, my husband, Tim, got me to go and play with him, and now I love the game.”
In fact, Glover loves the game so much that she decided to put together a golf tournament to help fund cancer research.
On Saturday, Feb. 25, with the help of the staff of the Lockhart State Park, Glover will host Lockhart”s first “Rally for a Cure,” benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
“I”d heard about other Rallies for the Cure in other areas,” she said. “And I thought that it would be something I could do here.”
With the help of her family, the staff of the Lockhart State Park, and several local businesses, Glover put together the co-ed shotgun scramble in only a few months time.
“All of the businesses here in Lockhart have been so great,” she said. “We”ve gotten donations for prizes from the State Park, from barbecue restaurants, from stores. If we get many more donations, we”re going to have to think of other categories to give prizes in.”
Planned categories and prizes include a Snakeye Putter for the “Closest to the Pin” and free golf for the men”s and women”s “Longest Drive.” Free dinners from local restaurants and other prizes will also be available.
Glover said that teams will not be assigned at registration. Each golfer will be responsible for putting together and entering their own four-person team to compete in the tournament. Course fees will be $15, and proceeds from the event will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
The event will be bittersweet for Glover, however. Although both she and her son beat their cancers, her father did not, and passed away on Feb. 25, 2005.
“That”s why I chose the date, Feb. 25,” she said. “My dad loved to golf, and this is also a way to honor him.”
The Rally for a Cure will tee off at the Lockhart State Park golf course at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25. Golfers can register until tee-off, Glover said.
