The Lockhart Lion football program started their district season by hosting the Taylor Ducks for the 2005 Homecoming and Junior High Night on Friday evening, Oct. 7. The game resulted in a disappointing loss for the Lions, 41-23.

Taking the crowns for Homecoming were Neli Reza with queen, Travis Grogan with king, Lindsay Wilson with princess, Chris Moreno with prince, Krystal Laws with duchess, J.C. Vogel with duke, Jennifer Jackson with duchess, and Steve Gonzales with duke.
In the first quarter, the Ducks kept the Lions scoreless with tough defense as their offense scored two touchdowns. Both of their scoring drives were finished with rushing touchdowns.
Starting the second quarter the scoreboard read 13-0 in Taylor”s favor. However, the Lions” offense wouldn”t allow a shutout game. Lockhart scored their first touchdown after senior quarterback Thomas Reppond carried the ball for three yards across the goal line. Taylor retaliated with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. The score was 7-21 at halftime.
After the halftime break, the Ducks increased their lead with another touchdown from a 94-yard kick-off return. The Lions” struck back by scoring from a safety and a 50-yard passing touchdown from Reppond to senior running back Dwin Roland.
The Lions entered the fourth quarter trailing 16-28. The tired Lion defense tried to hold Taylor”s offense drive; however, they allowed two running touchdowns. Reppond completed one more touchdown for the Lions to junior receiver Alex Joseph for 39 yards.
Overall, the Lions gained 323 yards, while giving up 417 yards on defense to Taylor. Reppond contributed 168 passing yards and 17 rushing yards. Leading Lockhart with rushing yards was Calvin Johnson with 89 yards, and leading the team with receiving yards was Roland with 60 yards.
Taylor completed most of their yards from rushing by gaining 358 yards.
“We competed hard and fought all the way to the end,” Head Coach Les Goad said. “Taylor is a more experienced team with solid athletes that have lots of speed. We need to get more physical on the line of scrimmage. Developing our strength is a key issue.”
The defeat gives Lockhart a 2-3 overall record and a 0-1 district record with their next game against the Connally Cougars. The Cougars currently have a 4-1 overall record with previous shutout victory against Reagan H.S., 33-0.
Connally uses their strong passing game against opponents. Cougar quarterback Steven Sheffield has completed 964 passing yards with 10 touchdowns.
For the rushing game, the Cougars” running back Patrick Morris has gained 436 yards over the season.
