Thelma Price
The Lord giveth and the Lord has taken away unto Him our mother, Thelma Rose Grosse Price at the age of 92. She was born on Sept. 2, 1923, in St. Louis, Mo. Thelma passed away after a brief illness on April 13, 2016 at Christopher House. She was predeceased by her parents Edward William Grosse and Teresa Rose Grosse; siblings, Berniece Stanton, Edward and Arvil Grosse; and belo
ved husband, Eldon Price.
Thelma and Eldon married in 1942 and raised their three children, Brent, Sandy and Cheryl in Lockhart, Texas. They were privileged to be able to celebrate their 50th anniversary before Eldon’s death. Thelma was a wonderful homemaker, mother, wife, grandmother and great grandmother.
In Lockhart, she managed the Lockhart Chamber of Commerce and played an active role with the Caldwell County Red Cross. She designed the Lockhart float and participated in representing Lockhart in parades around the state for many years. Thelma volunteered with the Red Cross aiding military families in time of crises helping to bring them home from overseas.
In 1962, the family moved to Austin where her work continued. She was business manager of Durham’s Business College and helped operate the school. Retiring after 25 years, she became a substitute in the Eanes School District school front offices, as well as the administration office. When Don Rogers retired as Superintendent of EISD, he took Thelma with him to the Texas Association of Community Schools to work as a key assistant. She was honored with an Honorary Life Member Award when she retired at the age of 82!
After two retirements, Thelma tirelessly devoted her time to her favorite charity, The Assistant League of Austin, also serving a term as president. She loved volunteering for the Settlement Home where she became an “honorary” member of the Children’s Department. Thelma was involved in the Austin Ostomy Association, serving as president for a couple of years. Dr. Jeff Kocurek was responsible for her successful surgery and longevity. He called on her frequently to counsel with his patients facing surgery and she called on him to speak at the oestomy meetings. She greatly enjoyed the many friends she made in volunteering.
Thelma was a 50 year member of First Presbyterian Church, serving on many committees and as a Deacon. She was very proud of her family, who she leaves with special memories. She was affectionately called Granda by her grandchildren whose photos covered all the walls in her home. Granda dearly loved her family particularly her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Thelma is survived by her children, the Rev. Dr. Brent Price and wife, Beverly, of Pasadena, California; Sandy Perkins and husband, John, and Cheryl Pany and husband, David, of Temple, Texas. Her beloved grandchildren are Brittney Price, Kelly Perkins Rigas, Michael Perkins and wife, Leslie, Bart Pany and wife, Jessica, and Brett Pany and wife, Amy. She had 10 great grandchildren: Nicholas, Morgan and Ellison Rigas; Everett and Peyton Perkins; Garrett, Meghan and Faith Pany; and Cooper and Finley Pany, as well as many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed.
A celebration of her life was held at First Presbyterian Church, 8001 Mesa Drive, Austin, Texas, on Saturday, April 16 at 11 a.m. with Pastors David Meriweather and Sarah Allen officiating.
