The filing period has closed for the City of Lockhart and Lockhart Independent School District elections, slated to appear on the ballot for the Nov. 8 general election. With all filings complete, area voters now have to answer the age-old question: To change, or not to change. With only one exception
, every seat up for election this year will be re-sought by the seated incumbent.
In the Lockhart Independent School District, each of the four single-member districts has come up for election this year.
In District One, Trustee Carl M. Cisneros will seek a second term in office. He will face a challenge in November from retired educator Beverly Anderson-Hill.
Board President Brenda Spillmann has represented District 2 for two terms, having first been elected in 2008. Her November challenge comes from first-time political candidate Miguel Islas, who announced his candidacy early this year.
The District 3 seat was vacated by the June resignation of Trustee Jessica Neyman. Former Trustee Rebecca Lockhart, who first served on the Board from 2000 – 2003, filed to fill the seat, but must first best political newcomer Bobby Herzog.
District 4 Trustee Jon Reyes has chosen to seek a second term in office. He will be challenged by Lockhart resident Warren Burnett.
The City of Lockhart also has an election slated on the ballot, come November. City voters will be asked to fill the single-member Districts 1 and 2, as well as the two At-Large positions on the council.
District One Councilmember Juan Mendoza has chosen to seek a third term in office. Far and away the youngest member of the Lockhart City Council, he will be challenged by Timoteo “Tim” Juarez, Jr., a former member of the Lockhart ISD Board of Trustees.
Second-term Councilmember John “Big John” Castillo will also seek reelection in District Two. He will face longtime Lockhart resident Loius Cisneros, a member of one of Lockhart’s best-recognized political families.
At Large Councilmembers Brad Westmoreland and Angie Gonzales-Sanchez are the only candidates who have filed to fill the two At Large seats on the November ballots. The two will run without outside opposition.
The Post-Register offers all candidates a one-time, 500 word or less “campaign announcement,” giving the candidate the opportunity to introduce themselves to their community. These announcements must be written by the candidate or one of their supporters, and will be neither drafted nor edited by the staff of the Post-Register, with the exception of corrections for spelling and punctuation. One headshot-style photograph may be included.
These announcements must be received within our general deadline constraints, meaning they must be received prior to 5 p.m. on the Monday of the week they are to be published. Any submissions received after 5 p.m. on Monday will not be considered until the following week. Campaign announcements will be published on a space-available, first-come, first-served basis. If more than one candidate in a race has submitted a campaign announcement and space is not available for all announcements in that race, none will be published.
The Post-Register will begin accepting Candidate Announcements on Aug. 26, 2016, with the final publication run on Sept. 8, 2016.
