Last Tuesday, Jan. 9, the Lady Lion Basketball teams took on the Clemens Lady Buffaloes at LHS Lion Gym. All three Lady Lion teams sent the Lady Buffaloes home with well-earned wins. Once again, the Freshmen Lady Lions played their hearts out and lost by the least amount of points with a score of 32-44. With only three points keepin
g them from having the least amount of point spread, the Varsity Lady Lions lost with a score of 42-57. The Junior Varsity Lady Lions improved their game a bit during the second quarter but lost to the Lady Buffaloes with a score of 18-58. All three Lady Lion teams got off to a late start. It was as if it took all three teams the entire first quarter to warm up. Once they got going they were able to put some points on the scoreboard.
Varsity
The Varsity Lady Lions lost by 15 points. Those points were the result of a well-calculated stampede by the Lady Buffaloes in the first quarter. The Lady Buffaloes rushed in with enough speed and skill to prevent the shell-shocked Lady Lions from scoring more than six points in the beginning of the game. The Lady Buffaloes stampeded 21 points onto the scoreboard ending the first quarter with a 6-21 score. Scoring for the Lady Lions in the first were Desiree Roland with a couple of two pointers for four points and Mariah Carter with one two pointer.
The second quarter was closer, with the Lady Lions adding 12 points and the Lady Buffaloes adding 15 points to their scores. After a fairly even match the Lady Lions ended the second quarter with a score of 18-36. Scoring for the Lions were Adrian Carter with a two pointer, Vanessa Gonzales with a two pointer and a free throw, Mariah Carter also with a two pointer and a free throw and Chelsy Martinez with a two pointer and two free throws.
After halftime the Lady Lions came out with a strong game. They put 10 additional points on the board for themselves and only allowed 11 points from the Buffaloes. They played hard and kept on playing hard all through the third quarter and onto the fourth. The Lady Lions ended the third quarter with a 28-47 score. Scoring in the third came from Ad. Carter with two free throws and a two pointer for a total of four points and M. Carter with two free throws and a couple of two pointers for a total of six points.
The final quarter was the best scoring quarter for the Lady Lions. They blasted 14 points out and kept the Lady Buffaloes having to settle for only 10 additional points. Unfortunately, the great surge at the end of the game was not enough for the win. The Varsity Lady Lions had to take another loss with a final score of 42-57. Scoring in the fourth quarter came from Andrea Carter who added a two pointer to the score, Ad. Carter made one free throw and M. Carter finished with three two pointers and five free throws.
The highest scorer was Mariah Carter with a total of 22 points in the game. The rest of the points came from Adrian Carter who contributed seven points, Chelsey Martinez and Desiree Roland who both added four points each, Vanessa Gonzales added three points and Andrea Carter added two points in the game.
Junior Varsity
Still struggling to find their game, the Junior Varsity team could not get beyond a couple of two pointers and some free throws. They were able to gain six points in the first quarter but the Lady Buffaloes racked up 14 points ending the quarter at 6-14. Scoring for the Lady Lions were Jania Michaelson with a two point shot and Jessi Greer with a two pointer and two free throws.
The second quarter was the best quarter for the JV team. They briefly found a stride and ran with it. They not only kept the Lady Buffaloes from scoring more than nine points, they were also able to score eight points for themselves. Halftime ended with a score of 14-23.
Scoring in the second quarter came from Bethany Horton who made a two point shot, Jessi Greer who contributed four points with a two point shot and two free throws and Teie Harris who added two free throws.
After the halftime break the JV Lady Lions game was nowhere to be found. Both the third and fourth quarters netted only two points each. The third quarter ended at 16-42 and the fourth ended with a score of 18-58. Courtney Ferris added her two point shot in the third. Bethany Horton added another two point shot in the fourth.
