The Lady Lions Varsity and Junior Varsity soccer squads hosted the Hays Lady Rebels at the Lion Stadium on Tuesday, Feb. 5. The Lady Rebels charged onto the field ready to dominate the games, and they did just that. The Varsity Lady Lions lost 11-0. The Junior Varsity Lady Lions lost 4-2.
The Varsity Lady Lions started off on

the wrong foot against Hays and never regained their footing. The Lady Rebels ran away with the ball and the game from the start. As much as they tried, the Lady Lions could not keep up with the speed and accuracy of the Lady Rebels. Hays made 11 goals during the Varsity match while allowing zero goals from Lockhart.
“The score doesn’t match the level at which the girls played tonight or the class they maintained throughout,” Coach Colleen Johnston said after the game. “We’re getting better every game and we’re learning to play together. That’s a great combination.”
Injuries still plague the Varsity team. Strong players Julia Boykin and Heather Schulle were unable to suit up for the match. Lindy Chamberlain and Tabitha Strawn left the game with ankle injuries while Christina Knudsen was forced out after being kicked in the ribs by a Lady Rebel.
The Lady Lions maintained a positive attitude despite the loss and according to Johnston, the Varsity team looks forward to their next couple games.
“These girls have so much heart and desire to play,” She said. “As a coach, that’s special because you can’t coach heart. Either the kids have it or they don’t. These kids do and I’m so proud to coach them because of it.”
Team Captain Meredith Moore agreed stating, “Despite any loss we may have or any injury we may suffer, we never quit. That’s way more important than what the scoreboard says.”
Junior Varsity
The Junior Varsity Lady Lions had a much better time playing Hays. They nearly toppled the Lady Rebels in their first home game. The Lady Lions did well, in the beginning. Unfortunately, the Lady Lions fell to the Lady Rebels 4-2.
The Lady Lions came out hustling early and took a quick 1-0 lead with a goal by freshman Sydney Henrichs.
“Sydney had a great left-footed shot just outside the 18 yard box,” Coach Tim Bayliss said. “It was Henrichs’ first goal of the season.”
The Lady Rebels countered 10 minutes later, taking the game to a 1-1 tie all the way to halftime.
After halftime, the Lady Lions pushed hard and found themselves in the Hays territory early on. Sophomores Perla Jaramillo and Adela Nino teamed up for a great one-two pass in the Rebels’ box. Jaramillo finished the play with her second goal of the season. Nino was credited with an assist on the play.
The Hays Lady Rebels countered fiercely and scored three quick goals against the Lady Lions taking the game score to 4-2.
With time winding down, the Lady Lions put pressure on the Rebels, allowing Lockhart to execute several great shots. Much to their frustration, the Lady Lions’ shots sailed wide or hit the post.
“I’m very proud of how the girls played tonight,” Bayliss said. “We fought hard the entire game. We just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.”
The Lady Lions’ next home games include a match against Lehman on Friday, Feb. 15 and another against Pflugerville Henrickson on Friday, Feb. 22.
See you at the games.
