Lions fall 9-4 to Hays Rebels and Canyon Cougars

The Varsity Lions hosted the Hays Rebels at Lion Field on Tuesday, March 11 and traveled to New Braunfels to face the Canyon Cougars on Friday, March 14. The Lions fell 9-4 to the Rebels and in an unfortunate coincidence, 9-4 to the Cougars.

The Lions started slow in their game against Hays. The Rebels ca

me out battling and scored six runs in the first two innings, leaving the Lions with a significant deficit.
Hays’ pitcher shut down the Lion batters until the seventh inning when the Lions scored four runs. Despite the late rally, the Lions displayed an incredible fight to the end attitude.
“The rally came a little late,” coach Mark Elder said. “We showed that we don’t give up.”
A.J. Crider pitched seven innings. After settling down, he did a great job on the mound.
Hays has been picked to finish second behind New Braunfels Canyon in district.

Lions vs. Canyon
Against the New Braunfels Canyon Cougars, Lockhart jumped to a 3-0 lead and held it until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Canyon scored seven runs. Defensive mistakes were a major problem for the Lions.
Jacob Castillo pitched a brilliant game against a Cougar team ranked top 10 in the state with a 14-1 record. He pitched well enough to beat a great hitting team.
Steven Crider and Zach Leija had two hits each.
“The Lions had the toughest start of the district facing the two top ranked teams,” Elder said. “I feel we played well in both games. We have Steele on Tuesday and look to get in the win column.”
The Lions hosted the Steele Knights at Lion Field on Tuesday, March 18, and will host the Clemens Buffaloes on Thursday, March 20. The Clemens game starts at 7 p.m. at Lion Field.
