Varsity Lions drop hard-hitting game to Mustangs

The Varsity Lions hosted the Manor Mustangs at the Lion’s Den on Tuesday, Jan. 6 and fell 92-68 after a hard-fought match.
The first quarter ended with the Lions behind 21-13. Manor came out strong and never let up. The Lions tried their best to stay in the game, but could not keep up with the Mustangs. Manor pressed throu
gh the Lion defense during all four quarters.
Scoring in the first came from Janovus Croomes, Hector Rangel, Xavier Moore and Jason Sanders. Croomes scored four points with a pair of two-pointers. Rangel also scored four, but with a two-point shot and two free throws. Moore scored three with a two-point shot and a free throw and Sanders sank a two-pointer.
The second was the best-scoring quarter for the Lions, who scored 23 points. The Mustangs also pushed hard in the second and scored 31 points, ending the first half at 52-36.
Moore scored six points in the second with a free throw, a two-point shot and a three-pointer. Joseph Gonzales and Ricky Rodriguez each scored five points. Gonzales made a three-pointer and a two-point shot. Rodriguez scored with a two-pointer and three free throws. Trent Albert, Croomes and Sanders each scored a two-pointer. Adam Renteria made a free throw.
After the halftime break the Lions came back to score 13 points in the third and 19 in the fourth. The Mustangs scored 20 points in both the third and the fourth ending the game at 92-68.
Scoring in the third came from Renteria, Sanders, Rangel, Moore, Rodriguez and Christian Estrada. Renteria and Sanders each scored three points with a free throw and a two-point shot. Moore, Rangel and Estrada each scored a two-pointer and Rodriguez made a free throw.
Gonzales was the high scorer in the fourth with a total of seven points. He made four free throws and a three-point shot. Sanders and Moore each scored four points in the fourth. Sanders made a pair of two-pointers and Moore made four free throws. Estrada and Albert each made a two-point shot.
The Lions hosted the Del Valle Cardinals at the Lion’s Den on Tuesday, Jan. 13 and will travel to Elgin to face the Wildcats on Friday, Jan 16. Check next week’s Post-Register for scores and highlights.
