Lions give strong performance at annual relays

With a somewhat small and tight-knit cadre of competitors, the Varsity and Junior Varsity Lions showed their mettle during the Lion Relays on Saturday, March 6.

Finishing in fourth place overall, the Varsity Lions put up at least one placing competitor in almost every event, earning a handful of first- and second-place

finishes along the way.

A foursome known for their distance running skill, Nate Moore, Samuel Post, David Dinh and Robert Uhr secured a first-place finish in the distance medley relay, finishing the race in 11:05.

Individually, Moore also finished first in the 3,200-meter run and the 1,600-meter run, with finishing times of 9:50 and 4:40 respectively. Noah Tunningley finished fifth in the 3,200, with a time of 10:30.

Dinh picked up a second-place finish in the 800-meter run, with a time of 2:04.2. Bobby Dinh came in fourth in 2:11, and Xavier Espinoza finished fifth, just two seconds later.

Hurdler Joseph Bell also struck gold for the Lions, finishing first in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.3 Kyle Medina finished fifth in 18.6

Bell also competed in field events, placing fourth in the discus with a throw of 132″02″ and fifth in the triple jump at 19″01″.

Landon Rivera rounded out the Lions competitive force on the field, placing fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 10″06″.

Sprinter Chad Randle earned third and fourth place respectively in the 200-meter run (23.3 seconds) and the 100-meter dash (11.3).

Medina placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 44.2.

The Lion Relay teams also competed well.

The 4×800-meter team, comprised of Post, Espinosa, Uhr and D. Dinh, placed third with a time of 9:02.

Randle, Chris Jackson, Rivera and Medina teamed up for a fourth place finish in the 1,600-meter relay in 3:42.1, while Brooks Pittman, Jackson, Kendall Till and Bell earned fifth in the 400-meter relay in 46.2. Pittman, Jackson and Till placed sixth with Rivera in the 800-meter relay.

The somewhat abbreviated JV Lions earned 58 points for a third place finish in the second meet of the season.

Sebastien Lamas led the team in wins, picking up first-place finishes in the long jump (18″04″) and the high jump (5″06″). Teammate JC Winkler also competed those events finishing fourth in the high jump at 5″04″ and sixth in the long jump at 16″06″.

Eli Spring was the leading runner for the JV Lions, finishing second in the 800-meter run in 2:17. Colton Russell finished three seconds behind, at 2:20, for fourth place.

Nicholas Avey earned a fifth-place finish in the 3,200 with a time of 11:17, and Derrick Hendricks placed sixth in the 1,600 at 5:08.

The JV Lion relay teams earned two fourth and one sixth place finish.

Lamas, Brandon Pleasant, Winkler and Zane Schnautz put up a time of 3:58.0 for fourth place in the 1,600-meter relay, while Lamas, Pleasant, Aaron Simmons and Winkler placed fourth in the 800-meter relay. Lamas, Pleasant, Simmons and Rene Rodriguez finished sixth in the 400-meter relay at 49.7.

The team will compete in the Rebel Relays at Hays High School on Friday, March 12.
