Prairie Lea sets all-time win streak at school

PRAIRIE LEA — It only took a half of a football game for Prairie Lea to establish a new winning streak for a program that began in 1938 (there was no football played at PLHS from 1960-2002).

The Indians disposed of The Winston School of San Antonio Friday night at Indian Feld, 52-0. Since 6-man football rules state a game where one team is leading by 46 or more by halftime is stopped, Prairie Lea only needed two quarters to accomplish the feat.

The win improved Prairie Lea to 5-1 on the season as it claimed a 5th-consecutive win after a season-opening 5-point loss (50-45) to Valor South Austin.

“We made history, but the playoffs are what we’re playing for,” Prairie Lea Head Coach Steven Brown said. “We’re taking this one brick at a time building this house. The foundation has been laid, but now we want to stay humble.

“We executed and took care of business against Winston.”

Brown said there was not really a lot of talk about the school record win streak other than some fans discussing it. This week will be Homecoming for the Indians, who will be sporting new uniforms for the game with gold jerseys and black pants.

“They’re going to look real nice,” Brown said of the uniforms.

Jimmy Soberanes started the scoring with a 46-yard run for Prairie Lea in the first quarter. Lane Fiscus kicked the PAT, which is worth two points in 6-man football, and the Indians led 8-0. 

Gabriel Garcia passed 22 yards to Fiscus for the next touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

Fiscus added two more touchdowns as well as two extra point kicks before the first quarter was over as Prairie Lea led, 30–0. 

In the second quarter, Soberanes scored on a 14-yard run, a 48-yard run, and finally a 15-yard run. Fiscus kicked two more extra points and the Indians lead 50-0.

The final two points came following a safety when the Indians’ Peter Duron tackled a Winston player in the end zone for the final margin. 

Soberanes finished with 183 yards on just 7 attempts, scoring four touchdowns. Fiscus added 76 yards on 7 carries, rushing for two touchdowns and catching one TD reception.

Defensively, Edwin Canepa led Prairie Lea with 8 tackles, followed by Joe Zapato with 7, Garcia 4, and Fiscus and Duron with 3 each. 

“We just need to keep playing well, keep blocking and tackling,” Brown said.

Prairie Lea will host Leander Founders Christian Academy at Indian Field.

Founders is 3-2 on the season after beating Valor North of Austin, 54-7.  The Indians and Crusaders have no common opponents this season.

Prairie Lea begins district play Oct. 25 after an open date. The Indians have the longest playoff drought in Texas at 80 years having last played in the postseason in 1944.

A Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned at PLHS on Friday.
