Indians humbled at homecoming game

After reeling off a school-record 5 consecutive victories, Prairie Lea was given a taste of humble pie Friday night as the Leander Founders Crusaders pelted the Indians, 54-6, during homecoming festivities.

“I was saying in my mind during this game that we needed to lose,” Prairie Lea head coach Steven Brown said. “I think some players were thinking that they couldn’t be beat. They got beat because they were thinking of dancing, courting, and all that stuff.

“We’ve got to get back to basics and do a lot of fundamentals this week. We’ve just got to get better.”

The Indians will have two weeks to get ready for their final 3-game district stretch.

Prairie Lea trailed, 16-0, when Lane Fiscus scored the Indians’ only touchdown on a 60-yard run in the first quarter.

Founders came back with a field goal, which is worth four points in 6-man football, to lead 20-0.

By halftime, Founders’ lead had grown to 40-6, and the game ended due to the 46-point rule in the third quarter when Founders led 54-6.

Jimmy Soberanes led Prairie Lea with 9 rushes for 86 yards, followed by Fiscus with 6 rushes for 68 yards, and Edwin Canepa with 4 carries for 19 yards. Fiscus also had 4 receptions for 49 yards. Gabriel Garcia was 5-of-6 passing for 48 yards.

Defensively, Fiscus led the way with 9 tackles, followed by Canepa with 8, and Garcia 5.

The Indians (5-2), next opponent will be at Benavides, not only the first road game of the year for Prairie Lea, but the team picked to win the league. The Eagles have won 3 consecutive games to pull even at 3-3 on the season.

Last season, Benavides handled Prairie Lea, 53-20.
