Lions gained valuable experience in trying season

There were some ugly moments, including losing the final four games by a combined 218-24, two of which were shutout losses.
However, those last four opponents for the Lockhart Lions each qualified for the 5A Division 1 playoffs, and A&M Consolidate and College Staton High School are each still alive after cruising in their first-round games last week.
Even the two non-district game for Lockhart to open the season reached the playoffs. Victoria West was 8-2 in 5A D2, while San Antonio Southwest was, like A&M Consolidated, a perfect 10-0 in the regular season. The Dragons won their first round 5A D1 playoff game 33-26 over Seguin. Victoria West edged Gregory-Portland 31-2u8 n its first-round game.
Lockhart scored back-to-back half-century-plus scores over lowly Lehman (52-7) and Cedar Creek (56-0), but after pulling even at 2-2 overall and a perfect 2-0 in District 13, the Lions lost their final 6 games and never scored more than 17 points in a game.
Nevertheless, not only were the Lions extremely young with a sophomore-dominated unit at times, but Head Coach Todd Moebes was without three offensive starters in the season finale – senior running back Nathaniel Gonzales, sophomore quarterback Kadon Moebes, and sophomore running back Nate Roland, all due to injuries.
Gonzales finished a stellar career after taking over for Sean McKinney the last two years and has hopes of playing at the collegiate level. Moebes replaced all-everything quarterback Ashton Dickens this season after Dickens rewrote much of the Lions’ career and season records.
The bad for Lockhart is Gonzales will have graduated before next season rolls around, but the good is all of the Lions’ underclassmen gained significant experience this season.
Meanwhile Lockhart Junior High’s A (Maroon) team won another district championship, winning at La Vernia.
