Deadline looms in council election

Only a week remains for potential candidates to file for a place on the ballot in the Nov. 2, 2010 election for four places on the Lockhart City Council.
Filing opened on July 26, and to at press time, although several candidates have expressed an interest in running, only f
our have officially entered the ring. The election, which will be held for the first time in conjunction with the November general election, will decide the placeholders for City Council Districts One and Two, as well as the two At Large seats on the council.
At Large incumbents Richard “Dick” Wieland and Paul Gomez both responded early, filing their application packets on July 29. Political newcomer Rick Womble has also filed for on of the At Large seats. In addition, two other candidates, Ronda Reagan and Angie Gonzales Sanchez have picked up application packets for the seats, but have not returned them.
In the At Large race, the two highest vote-getters in the pool will hold the seats for the next three years.
In District Two, John “Big John” Castillo has filed. Incumbent Mayor Pro Tem Frank Estrada, who has served District Two for more than a decade, picked up a packet, but later brought it back without filing for a place on the ballot. Gloria Estrada picked up a packet on Tuesday.
No one has officially filed for the District One seat, currently occupied by Kenny Roland. However, Juan Mendoza, Dyral Thomas and John Manning have all asked for application information. At press time, Roland had not picked up a packet.
The filing period for a seat on the Lockhart City Council ballot ends at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 24. For information or to pick up a packet, contact Connie Rodriguez at Lockhart City Hall, or call (512) 398-3461.
