Lion varsity baseball defeats Columbus
The Lockhart varsity baseball team defeated Columbus Tuesday night, six to two, in nine innings. Four Lockhart pitchers combined for the victory. They limited Columbus to three hits and had seventeen strikeouts between them for the night. The pitchers for Lockhart were senior Wes Selman, senior Jacob Mendez, junior Steve Gonzales and senior Clay Ohlendorf.
Columbus led
off the game by tripling to deep right-center field just beyond the reach of the diving Lockhart center fielder, junior Michael Wright. The next batter walked and moved to second on an errant pick off throw and Columbus scored on the play. The inning ended with a double play, as Jacob Mendez caught a screaming line drive and promptly threw to senior Andrew Capello at second base to double off the runner for the third out. This would be Columbus’ last serious threat until the ninth inning as the Lockhart pitchers begin to dominate the game.
Wright led off the action for Lockhart with a single into right field. He moved to second on a fielder’s choice from junior Aaron Torres. After an error by the short stop, he advanced to third, where he was stranded. Lockhart got something started in the second when senior Justin Garcia hit a single to right field and advanced to second as the ball went pass a diving right fielder. Andrew Capello then doubled to left field. Both runners were stranded when the next two batters struck out. Lockhart scored two runs in the third without the benefit of a hit. Three batters were hit by pitches and one was walked and two would score from third base on wild pitches from Columbus. Nothing much would happen again until the eight inning, when Lockhart scored four runs. Sophomore Josh Hazelett led off the inning with a double to right-center field. Successive walks to Wright and Torres loaded the bases. Lockhart then scored runs on a fielder’s choice, a dropped infield fly and a single by senior Dusty Mack.
This was Lockhart’s last scrimmage of the season. They open the regular, non-district part of the their schedule next Tuesday night on the road against Hays.
