Lady Lions gain momentum

The Lady Lions gave a strong showing during the Hays Rebel Relays on Friday, March 11, running circles around most, if not all, the competition.
The Varsity Lady Lions earned a total of 90 point to place third overall in the meet. District rivals the Canyon Cougars dominated the competition with 185 points to win fir
st, while the hosting Lady Rebels and the Lehman Lady Lobos earned 62 and 31 points to place fifth and sixth respectively.
Samantha Cowan brought home silver in the 200-meter dash, marking a time of 27.23 seconds. Teammate Shiletha Akins followed just over a second behind, placing fifth in 28.55.
Trena Lorett earned bronze in the 300-meter hurdles with a finish time of 50.42 seconds.
Olivia Smith took fourth in the 800-meter run, completing the course in 2:31.86.
Raven Reed took fifth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.26 seconds.
The Lady Lions’ 4×200-meter relay team made a strong second-place finish in 1:50.88, only four hundredths of a second behind the winners from Dripping Springs. That team was comprised of Cassie Arredondo, Akins, Cowan and Alexandria Carter.
Lorrett teamed with Arredondo, Akins and Smith for a third place finish and a time of 4:26.20 in the 4×400-meter relay.
The 4×100-meter relay team of Reed, Essence Thompson, Carter and Isis Johnson placed fifth, with a final time of 52.53 seconds.
The Lady Lions were fearsome on the field as well, with Gabby Galvan leading the way with two second place finishes.
Galvan completed a throw of 145’.75” to earn second in the discus, and a throw of 33’9.5” in the shot.
Lorett took the bronze in the triple jump, completing a jump of 32’0.
Leslie Jackson finished fourth in the shot put, with a mark of 29’11”.
Breanna Delgado finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 5’6”, and Isis Johnson placed sixth in the high jump with a mark of 4’8”.
The JV Lady Lions did not fare quite as well, only earning 37 points and placing seventh in the meet.
One of Lady Lions’ only “medal” came from Chanti Cyphers, who finished the 100-meter dash in 13.42 seconds to earn second place. Holly Nelson placed fourth in the same race, marking a time of 13.94 seconds.
Nessa Rios earned third place in the 800-meter run, finishing the course in 2:41.38.
The 4×100-meter relay team of Jaclyn Young, Nelson, Alexis Hurst and Cyphers took sixth with a time of 56.23 seconds.
Nelson, Young, Ally Brewer and Hurst also placed sixth in the 4×200-meter relay, with a total time of 2:04.78.
Hurst and Brewer teamed with Deanna Krueger and Young to take fifth in the 4×400-meter relay, finishing the race in 5:01.00.
Katelyn Guenther earned points for the Lady Lions, placing fifth in both the shot put (26’6”) and the discus (68’8”).
The Lady Lions will compete in meets around the district for the next three weeks, in preparation for the District Meet at New Braunfels Canyon on April 12-13.
