Willie Henry Pope
Willie Henry Pope, age 83, of Lockhart, Texas went home to the Lord on Tuesday, May 24, 2005, following a lengthy illness. He was born on May 3, 1922 in Caldwell County to Willie I. and Faye Callihan Pope and was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Delwin and Wilbur and by his beloved granddaughter, Katherine Elizabeth Pope.
Willie is survived by his wife o
f 55 years, Betty; his son, James H. and his wife Linda; his daughter, Joyce and her husband J. D. Cain; his sister, Lillian Rice; and his grandchildren, James and Sara Cain and Lili Pope.
Willie attended Southwest Texas State University but, at the outbreak of WW II, he left school to join the United States Army Air Force and was a B24 pilot, flying many missions over Italy. Following his service to his country he returned to Caldwell County and resumed his ranching activities. Willie loved the land and his cattle and spent many happy hours taking care of both. He also loved his wife and children and took great delight in them.
Willie was a long time member of Clearfork Baptist Church and later became a member of First Lockhart Baptist Church. He was known for his ready smile and willingness to befriend everyone he met. He will be missed by his many friends.
The family wishes to thank Rev. Gary Rodgers (Bro. Gary and Judy) of First Lockhart Baptist Church for his visits and calls during the last months of Willie”s life. They also want to thank Gene Randle and Clyde Cannop, Preston and Nancee Dobbs and Josh Rodgers for their many visits and all of the family and friends who supported Willie and Betty during this difficult time.
A celebration of Willie”s life was held at McCurdy Funeral Home in Lockhart on Friday, May 27, 2005, at 3 p.m. and interment will follow at the Lockhart City Cemetery where he will lie beside his granddaughter. Pallbearers were James Cain, Joe Pope, Travis Pope, Charles Landram, Clyde Cannop, Robert Duke, Ralph Williams and George R. Chapman.
