Three to attend Boys State
Lockhart High School students Justin Michelson, Edward Velazquez and Michael Martin Wright, are among 900 boys from around the state spending the week at the University of Texas, participating in the American Legion Boys State Conference.
Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students in the
nation. Only boys with outstanding qualities of leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty and service to their schools and community are considered.
It is a program where each participant becomes a part of the operation of his local, county and state government. The boys are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of being an American citizen.
The training is objective and practical with city, county and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs. Boys State has been a program of The American Legion since 1935. The conference started Saturday, June 4 and runs through Friday, June 10.
