Ten members of both the Lockhart Boys and Girls Track teams traveled to the Texas Relays last weekend to compete in the nations second largest track and field.

Only the Penn Relays in Philadelphia put on a larger meet. More 39,000 spectators witnessed this year’s spectacular. In all 17 meet records fell during the weekend meet, including one that was shattered by Lockhart

senior Nate Moore.

Moore ran a sensational race in the Boys’ 2,000 meter steeplechase, establishing a new Texas Relays record of 5:56.06. Moore’s time was the fastest run in the United States this year.

Moore also led the Boys’ 4×800-meter relay team to a 12th place finish by running his 800-meter leg in 1:58 seconds. The total time for the relay was 8:06, which is the fastest time Lockhart has run for that event since 2003. Other members of the relay included Nicholas Avey (2:03), Robert Uhr (1:58) and Joseph Hefner (2:06).

Uhr came back in the late afternoon to run the 1,600-meter race in very hot weather. He posted a time of 4:31, which placed him 22nd in a field of 27 competitors.

Senior Jordan Huckaby, who has become the schools all-time best shot putter and discus thrower, didn’t have his best meet of the year. Huckaby, who threw a school record of 56’0” in the Shot Put and 175’0” in the Discus a couple weeks ago, ended up scratching on all three attempts in the Shot Put and placing 11th in the Discus with a solid throw of 161’ 7” inches. If Huckaby had thrown his best of the season he would have been third overall and would have been just one foot from second place.

Senior Joseph Bell ran a time of 15.44 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles. Bell finished 30th out of 44 competitors in the hurdles. It is interesting to note that nearly all the hurdlers who ran faster than Bell were from Class 5A high schools.  Possibly only three hurdlers ahead of Bell were from Class 4A schools.

The Girls Sprint Relay team of Cassidy Schmidt, Essence Thompson, Lauren Schuelke and Isis Johnson ran a time of 52.09. They placed 73rd out of 120 relay teams. Once again, the majority the schools who ran faster were from the 5A classification.

Lockhart traveled New Braunfels last week to run in the Canyon Relays and then will competed in the District Meet at New Braunfels Canyon on April 11-12.

Check next week’s Post-Register for details on this year’s district finals.
