The Lions tucked another victory into their belts on Friday night, in the process breaking a long-standing scoring record when they defeated the Cedar Creek Eagles 71-13.

Lockhart used their home-field advantage for all it was worth, putting 21 points on the board during the first quarter alone, and continu

ing to stack up unanswered points until late in the second quarter, when the Eagles finally got the ball across the goal line.

Lockhart answered that score firmly, when sophomore Tyrell Williams scored on a 90-yard kickoff return to close the half.

The Eagles returned to the field after the half with new determination, quickly scoring their second touchdown on a 49-yard rush.

Lockhart’s defense, however, shut the Eagles down again almost immediately, and the Lions continued to dominate for the rest of the game, not allowing another touchdown point for the Eagles, while adding 23 points of their own and closing the game with a big 71-13 victory.

Before Friday night, the most the Lions had scored in any given game appears to be 69 points, which the Lions scored in a 1945 shutout of the Luling Eagles.

Friday’s victory brought the Lions to 3-0 on the season, already ahead of their win records for the last two years. Still, the perpetual underdogs took more than a victory off the gridiron.

“This team is all about sportsmanship,” said senior Marcus Rodriguez, who rushed for 182 yards and two touchdowns on Friday. “And we’re not happy that the score got out of hand the way it did… but we feel good and we did a good job, and you just do what you have to do.”

As the Lions use this week’s bye to gear up for the start of District play on Sept. 28, the Lions are confident, but cautious.

“This was a great win and a good confidence booster for us,” said senior Ryne Lehman. “But it’s not always going to be easy like this. It’s going to get harder from here on out.”

Both Lehman and Rodriguez agree that the increased confidence and improved record the Lions have enjoyed in the pre-district season is a result of their growth and work in the offseason.

“We did more training over the summer, with weights and learning how to push ourselves,” Lehman said. “That’s making a difference.”

“… we’re used to the new system now, and we’re focused and ready for district,” Ramirez added.

The District season promises big challenges for the Lions. First up, they will travel to Seguin to square off with the Matadors, who have a 1-2-0 record so far this season.

Most recently, Seguin won 35-14 over the Crockett Cougars, who fell to the Lions, 35-19 last week.

Seguin has lost to New Braunfels (41-29) and Del Valle (36-9) this season. Like Lockhart, the Matadors finished last season at 2-8. District play kicks off at Matador Stadium, 815 Lamar Dr. in Seguin, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28.
