Despite a strong, fast start by the Lions under the Friday Night Lights at Bob Shelton Stadium last week, the powerful Hays Rebel squad proved to be too much for Lockhart, who fell 56-6 in the brutal, physical contest.
The Lions opened scoring on the night, when Lion sophomore Curtis Hawkins slipped through
the Rebel line for a 63-yard touchdown run, minutes into the first quarter.
Hawkins” score was the only time the Lions were able to find the end zone for the rest of the evening, plagued by Rebels” strong defense and the virtual one-man offensive show led by Hays quarterback Caleb Kimbro, who completed seven of 12 passes and rushed for 146 yards and five touchdowns over the course of the evening.
“You have to give credit to Hays,” said Head Coach Paul Kilby after the game. “They played outstanding.”
Indeed, the Lions” defense was nearly powerless to stop Kimbro and the rest of the Hays offense, as they marched up and down the field, stacking up 500 rushing yards and 100 passing yards, and besting Lockhart nearly 2-1 on first downs.
“We can”t dwell in this game long,” Kilby said. “The effort was certainly there tonight, but the execution was not always where it needed to be.”
Kilby said the Lions simply have to push forward and look to the future; the team needs to win three of their next four games to meet their season goal of a playoff bid. Standing in their way are Kerrville Tivy (4-2, 3-0), Alamo Heights (5-1, 3-0) and Lehman (1-5, 0-3).
First, though, the Lions will host Boerne Champion (3-3, 1-2) for Junior High Night on Friday, Oct. 19.
Kilby said the key to stopping Champion will be fighting against their aerial attack. So far this year, the Chargers have put up a whopping 1,967 passing yards, 610 of those against Marble Falls and 585 against New Braunfels.
“We must control the ball and limit their offense”s snaps and clock time,” he said.
In District play, the Chargers have fallen to both Alamo Heights (24-0) and Kerrville Tivy (27-14). Their only district win has been against Lehman (16-7).
The Lions go into the matchup at 4-2 (1-2) with a district win over Clemens.
Kickoff is scheduled Lion Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night.
