Fred Blundell

Fred Blundell, a lifelong resident of Lockhart, passed away on June 20 after a short illness. He was born on Sept. 10, 1930, in Caldwell County, Texas. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Norma; his sons, Robert and Richard Blundell; step-daughters, Donna Stephens and Paula Hodges; grandchildren, Paul Stephens, Leigh Anne Newcomer, Allie Hodges, Natalie Hodges and Ro

xanne Blundell; as well as numerous friends and other family members. Fred will also be missed by his cat family “Bear” and “Goldie” that he cherished greatly.

Fred graduated from Lockhart HS in 1949 and received a four-year scholarship to play football at what was then Sam Houston State Teachers College. Despite arriving at the Huntsville campus as a 163 pound freshman, he went on to start as a Center all four years of his collegiate playing career. He graduated from Sam Houston with a bachelor”s degree and began his career as a school teacher and track/football coach. He later earned his master”s degree in education as well. Fred retired from teaching after over 33 years in the school districts of Rockport, Baytown, Alice, and Lockhart, Texas.

The Bible says God “loves a cheerful giver,” and Fred gave to others without expecting anything in return. He cheerfully helped his family in times of need, and also helped his numerous friends, sometimes giving to random acquaintances throughout his years because he thought it was the Christian thing to do.

One of Fred”s passions was the desire to help any who sought to better themselves through education. Throughout the years, Fred and Norma have funded and supported educational scholarships. He left an impression with hundreds of kids throughout his teaching career, whether it be through teaching Algebra, or coaching football.

Throughout his 83 years, Fred accomplished many things. One being in 1952, he played and started in the “Shrimp Bowl,” the first post season bowl game in the history of Sam Houston State. Fred was an avid outdoorsman, spending many years of his life fishing and hunting. He once caught a flounder that held the Texas state record for approximately a month.

In all, Fred Blundell lived a “full life.” A memorial service for the “Celebration of his Life” will be held on June 28 at 2 p.m., at McCurdy”s Funeral Home, Lockhart, Texas. His family requests any and all “Fred stories” to be shared.
