The Lady Lions ended the year on a sour note, traveling to Alamo Heights on Dec. 21 and falling in consecutive games to the Lady Mules.

The Freshman Lady Lions gave a strong performance and held nearly even throughout the game, ending the night on the low end of a 39-37 final score.

Tassandra McClellan pulled in 19 points for her

team, followed by Trena Lorrett, who scored eight. Brook Hoskins and Ana P. Mendoza were recognized as key players for the Lady Lion defense.

The JV Lady Lions took the court, and after sluggish start, turned the game around. Unfortunately, the fire came a bit too late to even up the 38-44 score.

“The third quarter was big for us,” Coach Brittany Wilson said. “We came out of the half down by 11 and outscored our opponent 16-5. We played great basketball.”

Candace Berry was key to her team’s success, pulling in 17 of the team’s 38 points.

“[Berry] was extremely active and played hard,” Wilson said. “She was a leader out on the court and gave us the lift we needed.”

Wilson said the entire team was strong on defense, playing active basketball and limiting fouls.

Kim Martinez chipped in six points for the Lady Lions, and Chelsea Jones added another five.

“We will continue to work hard and do all that is necessary for us to be successful,” Wilson said. “We played outstanding basketball and I believe we have a bright future ahead of us.”

The Varsity squad also played a strong game, but were unable to overtake the Mules. They fell 55-31 in what Wilson called their “most aggressive game yet!”

The Lady Lions shot 29 percent from the field.

Isis Johnson established herself as a team leader with a double-double, 11 points and 15 rebounds to finish the night.

“[She] was huge for us, getting points in the paint and getting to the free throw line,” Wilson said.

Cassie Schroeder and Sierra Aguilar contributed five points each, and Schroeder picked up five rebounds. Tory Hill also contributed with four points and seven rebounds.

“We are starting to come together and play the Lady Lion basketball we always knew we could,” Wilson said. “We were getting the looks we wanted, but unfortunately the shots weren’t falling.”

Wilson said the team also tightened up on defense, knowing defense has to be a strong point for the team.

“I believe it was a great game [despite the losing score],” she said. “We are moving in a forward direction and we will see victories soon.”

The Lady Lions will return from the winter break to host the Clemens Buffaloes in a district contest on Jan. 4. Freshman and JV games will start at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Varsity at 7 p.m. The Lady Lions will also play at home on Friday, Jan. 7, against LaVernia, with tipoffs scheduled at 5, 6:15 and 7:30 p.m.
