Dolores “Lola” Capello Montoya
Dolores “Lola” Capello Montoya was called by our Heavenly Father to her eternal home on Friday, Oct. 26, 2007. Dolores was born on May 23, 1907 in the Lockhart area to Damian and Elena (Benavidez) Capello.
Lola was in the grocery store business from the time she entered her early teens until the mid 1990″s. On Sept. 16, 1944, she married Willie Montoya. He joined her
in the grocery store business and the store became known as the Montoya Grocery and Market. Together they embarked on a journey of operating the typical “Mom and Pop” store filled with fresh meats, cheese, produce, bottled soda water and best of all the glass candy counters with all the penny and nickel candy anyone could desire. Lola was definitely at her happiest while operating her business and serving her customers.
Although she never had children, she took great joy in having her nieces, nephews and her husband”s grandchildren help her in the store”s operation. After her husband passed away in 1993, she continued to operate the business for some time. However, as she reached her late-80s, it became more and more difficult for her to continue operating the store. She real ized it was time to close the store. She had served her community well and had operated her business for well over 60 years.
There are so many of life”s lessons to be learned from the qualities possessed by Lola, such as: the rewards of hard work, the satisfaction that public service brings and most of all, the power of faith and love. Perhaps this approach to life contributed to her longevity.
On May 23, 2007, Lola celebrated her 100th birthday with her family and friends at Chisolm Trail Nursing and Rehab Center. During the months following her birthday, she found peace and happiness by reading her daily devotionals and humming spiritual tunes.
Lola was preceded in death by her parents, spouse and several siblings: Benita Velasquez, Cruz Ruiz, Pedro, Nolberto, John, Frank, Santos, and Paul and Damian Capello.
She is survived by Joe and Alice Capello, Hortencia Campos, Thomas and Karin Montoya, Gilbert and Virginia Montoya, Esther and Paul Contreras, and numerous nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass was celebrated by Reverend Albert Ruiz at St. Mary”s Catholic Church in Lockhart on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007 with interment following at Memory Lawn Memorial Park in Martindale, Texas. Serving as pallbearers were Lee Montoya, Richard Ruiz, Jaime Capello, Jaime Capello, Antonio “Tony” Velasquez and Guadalupe “Lupe” Velasquez.
The family wishes to thank all of the wonderful people at Chisolm Trail Nursing and Rehab Center, Dr. Charles Laurence, Reverend Robert Becker of St. Mary”s Catholic Church in Lockhart and Reverend Albert Ruiz of St. Elizabeth”s in Pflugerville and all our extended family and friends who joined in the journey with us.
