SUMMARY:Chapparal Coffee Midnight Monday with Claire Cronin + Alex Dupree
DESCRIPTION:Haunting folk songs on electric guitar from Claire Cronin. Thoughtful\, poetic country songs from Alex Dupree. Claire and Alex studied poetry together\, now they’re playing a show! \nat Chaparral Coffee in Lockhart\nMonday\, Jan. 20\n9 pm \nCLAIRE CRONIN:\n“When she sings\, you believe every word.”\n– Sam Sodomsky\, Pitchfork \n“For fans of: Flannery O’ Connor\, Sharon Van Etten\, and werewolves.”\n– Zoe Camp\, Bandcamp \n‘Big Dread Moon’ (Orindal Records\, 2019) by Claire Cronin is a record of spiritual urgency. Cronin’s lyrics and melodies draw on the the stranger aspects of early American musical tradition\, revealing the genre’s ties to “folk horror\,” wherein supernatural and mundane worlds merge. Quietly sinister ballads like “Tourniquet” and “Wolfman” arise from the weird logic of dream\, myth\, and half-forgotten memories. Suburban homes\, TV screens\, and city landscapes are haunted by saints\, beasts\, ghosts\, seers\, and a “calm and decisionless” god. Lyrics which implore or command act like prayers or spells embedded inside Cronin’s fever dream stories and personal confessions. \nBig Dread Moon:\nhttps://clairecronin.bandcamp.com/album/big-dread-moon \nLive on Audiotree:\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r77i12KJm48 \nALEX DUPREE \nAlex Dupree is a published poet\, who’s spent much of the past few years teaching at UC Irvine\, playing in the LA-based bands Mister Paradise and Dawn & Dupree\, and at artist residencies in Wyoming and Texas. Originally from Texas\, Alex Dupree founded The Trapdoor Band in Austin in the early 00s\, releasing three albums before switching to the Idyl moniker and releasing two albums under that name. 2017’s You Winsome\, You Lonesome was the first album released solely under his name. It’s a study songwriter’s album with heavy doses of indie rock and country flourishes that drew comparisons to both Bill Callahan and Willie Nelson. \nYou Winsome\, You Lonesome:\nhttps://alexdupree.bandcamp.com/album/you-winsome-you-lonesome
