December 13, 1945 — November25, 2024

James Gordon Withers passed away Monday, November 25, 2024 at his home in Lockhart, Texas. Gordon was born in San Luis Obispo, California on December 13, 1945 to Betty and Clayton Withers. The family moved to Texas right after he was born. He graduated from Lockhart High School in 1964 and then attended TCU for a few years. He married Kathy Simon and had two children, Mark Gordon Withers and Kari Amanda Withers.

Gordon spent much of his time, in his younger years at Lake LBJ, where he worked at Honeymoon Camp, every summer. He started ranching in the Luling-McNeil area in his early 20’s and it was his passion for 50+ years.

He spent the last 26 years with the love of his life, Dixie Withers. Together, they continued to build up the ranch and loved spoiling their grandchildren.

Over the years he sold cattle to friends in Australia, Africa and to many notable people such as Earl Campbell, Nolan Ryan, and Ray Charles. He taught Mark and Kari everything they needed to know about ranching. Gordon was also an avid hunter and spent most of the season in South Texas and Mexico hunting with his brother Clark, Mark, Kari, and numerous other friends.

He was on the Board of Superior Dairies, Inc., Judged numerous cattle shows across Texas, was a member of the American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA), and worked the Watermelon Thump Auction for many years.

When his grandsons and granddaughter came along, he took great pleasure in teaching them all about the different aspects of country life, ranching, and hunting. His grandson, Payton, became his right-hand man on the ranch as soon as he started walking.

He was preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Betty (Raines) Withers, his brother Nye Clark Withers, and his son, Mark Gordon Withers.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Dixie Casteel Withers; sister, Nancy Gail Allen; daughter, Kari Amanda Withers, step-son Aaron Grant, step-daughter Samantha Grant; grandsons Justin & Payton Fairchild, granddaughter Brenna Withers, and numerous nieces, nephews, and step-grandchildren.

A visitation was held on Monday, December 2, 2024, at McCurdy Funeral Home from 5-7PM.
