Junior Varsity Lions on a roll
The Lockhart Lions Junior Varsity team is on a roll. Their record is now 3-0, with wins over La Grange, Gonzales and Floresville. Their latest, a 20-18 win over the Floresville Tigers, happened on Thursday, Sept. 13.
“The JV played with a lot of heart and kept the Floresville defense off the field most of the first half,” assistant football coach Bryan Robinson sai
d. “Our offensive standouts were Tyler Tolley, Matt Tienda, Jordan Officer, Kevin Rodriguez and Dylan Messerly.”
Messerly scored the first touchdown. Pittman’s extra point attempt failed. On the Lions’ next possession, Tienda scored the second touchdown in the game on a reverse good for 42-yards. Messerly’s attempt at a two-point conversion was successful with a quick dive into the end zone, ending the first half with the Lions leading 14-12.
The second half of the game began with an interception by Cody Reed. The Lions’ offense drove the ball deep into Floresville territory, but was ultimately stopped short of scoring. The Lion defense responded by recovering a Floresville fumble in their own end zone for a Lion touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good for a score of 20-12.
Floresville came back to score another touchdown for a final score of 20-18. The Lion defense prevented the Floresville two-point conversion attempt to seal the third JV Lion victory.
“The kids responded well to the Floresville offensive pressure,” Robinson said. “They are looking forward to their game against Hays next week. I feel we are two or three plays away from really dominating our opponents. If we work hard during practices, it will show on game days. We are now 3-0 so we know we have something special happening with this JV team. We now have to stay focused on keeping the intensity everyday. Our defensive standouts included Kendall Till, who made an interception at the end of the game, Ryan Houston, Kevin Rodriguez, Dalton Dabbs and Nolan Lockhart.”
The Freshman Lion teams both lost to the Floresville Tigers.
The Freshman Maroon team lost 21-0.
Highlights in the Maroon game included a big play for the offense by Guillermo Juarez who made a 20-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion. In defense the leading tacklers were Kevin Silva and Omar Estrada each with six tackles. Josh Sanders made five tackles, one assist tackle and a quarterback sack. Juarez and Jonathan Alvarez also made a quarterback sack each.
The Freshman White team lost 18-0.
Highlights from the game included one interception for a 20-yard return by Rene Rodriguez. The game also had an all around good performance on both defense and offense by Jim Martinez.
