Lady Lions crush Harlandale for Bi-District Championship
The Lady Lions rocketed ahead in playoff action last weekend, soundly defeating the Harlandale Indians in two games to be named Bi-District Champions.
On Friday, April 29, the Lady Lions hosted the Indians in the first of what could have been a three-game series.
Jessica Henderson started off the offense by getting on base by an error by the Harlandale shortstop. She was
awarded second base due to the ball leaving the playing field, and Mackinzee Griebel picked up the first RBI of the game.
Griebel picked up another single in the third, and Morgan Rives added the RBI when she drove Griebel home.
From the mound, Mikaela Flores shut the Indians down, only allowing three hits and striking out four batters on the way to the 2-0 victory.
On Saturday morning, the Lady Lions packed up and traveled to Harlandale for the remainder of the series.
The Lady Lions traveled to Harlandale for game two of the series. Once again, the Lady Lions were hot out of the gate, playing aggressive offense and scoring four runs in the first inning.
Jessica Henderson scored first and Mikaela Flores scored on a pass ball. Chelsea Capello got the Lady Lions fired up with a two-run home run over the left field fence. Later, Brianna Ortiz drove Henderson in for the fifth run of the game, and Giselle Maciel picked up two RBIs with a single up the middle to bring the score to 7-0 in the middle of the fourth.
The Indians answered back in the bottom of the fourth, picking up four runs to close the gap to 7-4, but the Lady Lions were determined to finish the series in two.
In the sixth, Maciel drove in Mikaela Flores, and Amanda Capello brought Maciel across the plate to improve the score to 9-4.
Flores shut the Indians down entirely in the sixth and seventh innings, closing out the day with eight strikeouts.
The Lady Lions have advanced to the second round of post-season play, and will face the Number Two-ranked Dripping Springs Lady Tigers for the Area Championship at Austin’s Noack Field on Friday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m.
