Lady Lions v. Hays
On Monday, March 29, the Lady Lion varsity softball team began the second round of district play. Lockhart’s district record entering this game was 4-1, having lost to Elgin 2-1 in 12 innings.

The Lady Lions marked another win, defeating the Rebels 4-0.

Lockhart scored early in the second inning as Taylor Rives reached base on a f

ielder’s choice and was moved around to third base on a line drive shot to left-center by Briana Ortiz, who tallied a stand-up double. Freshman Mackinzee Griebel picked up a single to score T. Rives for a 1-0 lead.

The other three runs were scored in the fourth as the Lions had a string of hits by Mikaela Flores, Chelsea Capello and Griebel. Brandy Stacks came up a winner slapping a stand-up triple over the right-fielder’s head, while Amanda Capello sent the ball screaming into left field for a double.

This rally gave Lockhart the 4-0 lead.

Senior Jamie Schulle pitched for the Lady Lions, allowing only two hits and no runs. She also added six strikeouts to her resume.

Offensive standouts for the game were A. Capello (2-2 with a double); Griebel (2-3 with one RBI); Stacks, who contributed a triple; Ortiz, with a double; and Flores, T. Rives and C. Capello with one single each. C. Capello also added two RBIs.

Lady Lions v. Lehman
On Tuesday, April 6, Lockhart took a disappointing loss at home to the unranked Lady Lobos from Lehman. The Lobos surprisingly stole a 3-1 win over one of the district’s front runners.

Lockhart came out flat with the bats, scoring only one run in the fourth. This came from the Rives sisters, who tried to get a rally going as T. Rives reached base on a single and was waved home on her sister Morgan Rives, who slapped single into deep left field. The Lions had a total of only four hits on the night.

Lone hits came from Stacks and T. Rives with singles, while M. Rives was 2-3 with one double and one RBI.

Lockhart left seven runners on base and had multiple errors defensively.

The Lobos took the lead in the sixth inning 3-1.

Schulle pitched for the Lady Lions and had added four strikeouts to her season tally. She was able to keep the Lobos off balance, until they had two clutch hits mixed in with two errors by the Lions.

T. Rives then moved into the pitcher’s position to try and help Lockhart defensively. She ended up striking out four Lobos, but with the Lady Lions offense out of gas there was no way Lockhart could regain the lead.

Lady Lions v. Manor
On Friday, April 9, Lockhart defeated the Manor Mustangs 6-0.

They had to regain momentum from the tough loss on Tuesday and they did just that, according to Coach Alisha Homann.

Freshman Morgan Rives opened scoring for the Lady Lions with her third homerun of the season, a two-run blast over the left field fence that scored Jarin Hazelett, a pinch runner for catcher Amanda Capello, who had reached based on a single.

In the fourth, M. Rives reached base on a walk, followed by Flores with a single and C. Capello with another flaming single and an RBI to bring the score to 5-0.

There would be one more run scored in the sixth inning as Griebel smacked a stand-up triple over the right-fielder’s head, and then scored off a hard hit by Stacks.

Schulle popped a hard ground ball to right field, moving Stacks into scoring position.

The Lady Lions blew the game wide open as T. Rives sent a high ball sailing toward the fence. What looked to be a home run was robbed as the Mustang left-fielder snagged the ball from the top of the chain link fence, holding the score at 6-0.

Offensive numbers for the Lady Lions were: T. Rives (2-4); A. Capello (2-3); M. Rives (2-3 with one home run and one RBI); C. Capello (2-4 with one RBI); Griebel had a triple and one RBI; Stacks had a single and two RBIs; and Schulle and Flores each added a single.

Rives pitched for the Lady Lions, and allowed no runs and only two hits. She also added eight strikeouts to her stat sheet.

The Lady Lions are placed second in district behind the undefeated Elgin Wildcats. They will travel to Del Valle on Friday night to face the Del Valle Cardinals, and will finish the season on Tuesday, April 19 when they host their district rivals, the Wildcats.
