The Varsity Lady Lions picked up another victory on Tuesday, Nov. 13, when they shut down the Austin Crockett Lady Cougars 40-14 in the Lion’s Den.
The Lady Lion defense was strong from the start, and played a huge part in the victory, according to Head Coach Brittany Wilson.
“Defense is something we
take pride in, and we practice it every day,” she said. “We scored 15 points in the first quarter alone due to fast break steals and lay ups.”
Alex Martinez, Kim Martinez and Raven Reed had ten steals between them over the course of the game.
Seniors Essence Thompson and Mikaela Ramirez also ran through several passes leading to fast break opportunities and were able to set up the post down low, Wilson said.
Tassandra McClelland scored six first-quarter points, creating a big presence in the paint.
Sophomores DeAnna Quintanilla and Cynthia Chavez also made big contributions, with solid post ups and containing the post of the opposition.
The Lady Lions led 25-7 at the half.
In the second half, the Lady Lions came together and continued to push with, great energy on both ends of the court.
Although the scoring slowed down, the Lady Lions held on to their edge and their momentum, and picked up the pace again in the fourth quarter.
Thompson led the team in scoring with 11 points. Reed picked up nine, and McClelland had six. A. Martinez and M. Ramirez had five points each, and Quintanilla and Chavez each had two.
“I am very proud of our effort and we will continue to work hard to improve,” Wilson said after the game.
The Lady Lions will host the Gonzales Apaches at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
