Lady Lions take lead in district play
The Varsity Lady Lions scored a key victory over district rivals the Elgin Lady Wildcats last Friday night, completing the first round of district play undefeated and securing the lead in District 48-AAAA softball.
The Lady Lions hit the field on fire, ready to give their top performance to a home crowd.
The game was very tense as both pitchers held hitters at
bay and solid defense allowed zero base runners for four innings.
Everything changed in the fifth when first baseman Jamie Schulle led off the inning with a stand-up triple, bringing the crowd to their feet in anticipation of a run. Amanda Capello came to the plate with a full count and put the ball into shallow left field, scoring Schulle.
Briana Ortiz came to the plate and capitalized on the momentum, smoking a stand-up double to the fence and bringing Capello home.
These two runs gave Lockhart still more confidence in the upcoming innings as the defense shut down any run production for the Lady Wildcats.
Pitcher Taylor Rives gave an impressive performance in the circle, forcing Elgin to ground out or fly out and allowing only three hits on the night.
The Lady Lions started the second round of district play at home on Tuesday evening, and after an bye on Friday, will travel to Kyle to face the Lehman Lady Lobos on Tuesday, April 7. The Lady Lions return to their home field to face the Manor Lady Mustangs on Thursday, April 9.
