Lady Lions take third in Floresville tourney
The Lady Lion varsity softball team competed in the Floresville tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Lady Lions finished third among a 16-team showing. On Friday, Lockhart played three 55-minute pool games, which seeded them in bracket play. The Lions won all three games defeating Georgewest, Pharr San Juan and La Vernia High School.
Later that afternoon in their fir
st bracket game, the Lady Lions defeated Devine High School 2-0. Hitting the ball hard, Lockhart pressed the defense and forced Devine to commit several errors. Hits came from Janie Juarez and Kassie Gaddis. From the mound, Taylor Boedeker struck out nine and allowed only three hits.
On Saturday, Lockhart faced San Antonio Southwest. With four runs in the first inning and another in the third, the Lady Lions jumped off to a great 5-0 lead. Unfortunately, in the top of the fourth, Lockhart’s defense went sour, allowing the Dragons to take the lead and the win 6-5. Big hitters included Juarez with an out-of-the-park home run and Brandy Stacks with a double. Jamie Schulle went 2-2 with a double, while Veronica Escobedo and Zaida Hager added a single each.
That evening the Lady Lions met district rival New Braunfels Canyon.
Lockhart jumped out ahead with a 1-0 lead in the first, but Canyon answered back tying the game at 1-1. In the third inning the Lady Lions’ bats came clearly alive, scoring two more runs to put Lockhart up 3-1. The Cougars answered back with one run, due to a bad hop over left fielder Martinez’s head.
From inside the circle Schulle delivered, throwing the outs and forcing the Cougars to go down swinging. The game ended with a diving catch by shortstop Stacks.
Tournament MVP went to sophomore pitcher Schulle, who pitched an outstanding tournament. Throwing four games for the Lady Lions, Schulle worked the batters striking out a total of 13. She also had several hits and one double for the tournament.
