The Lockhart Lions’ varsity basketball team traveled to Pflugerville for their second district match up against the Hendrickson Hawks on Tuesday, Feb. 8, that resulted in a 62-80 defeat.
The Lions were in a district race for third place against the Hawks. After their defeat in Pflugerville, the Lions lost their guarantee of t
he third place trophy.
“This was without a doubt our biggest game of the year. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get the win. I feel like our inability to connect at the free-throw line coupled with our poor shooting led to our downfall. I think our nerves were amped up pretty high too.”
The Lions fought hard for the lead in the first quarter, but the Hawks came out on top with a slim 14-13 lead.
In the second quarter, Lockhart was outscored again and only allowed nine points by the Hendrickson defense while their offense scored 20 points.
The 11 point deficit in the second half left Lions behind 34-21 going into the locker room at halftime.
After their short rest, the Lions came out fighting, however, the Hawks advanced their lead gaining 21 points. Hendrickson gave up 20 points to Lockhart making the score 55-41 at the top of the fourth quarter.
The Lions scored another 20 points in the fourth quarter, but gave up 25 points on defense giving the Hawks their highest scoring quarter in the game.
High scorer for the Lions was Jacob Alvarez with 23 points including 4 three-pointers. Alvarez has totaled eight three-pointer in district with four coming from the game against the Hawks.
Scoring in the double-digits for Lockhart were Jonathan Sanders with 13 points, and Garrett Shafer with 11 points including two three pointers.
Defensively, the Lions grabbed 43 rebounds and 12 steals forcing turnovers for the Hawks.
