The Varsity Lions defeated the New Braunfels Unicorns 10-4 at Lion Field on a wet, drizzly Friday, March 28, and lost to Lehman 13-6 on Tuesday, March 25 during an away game.
Lions vs. Unicorns
The Lions were not deterred by the relentless drizzle that soaked the field, their uniforms and, more importantly, the balls a
nd bats. They refused to allow the Unicorns to gain a foothold on Lion Field.
Lion pitcher A.J. Crider, who is averaging 12 strikeouts per game, showed the drenched Unicorns what the Varsity Lions are all about by pitching a great game.
Aubrey Voigt made it back onto the line up after being out for the last two games because of a pulled muscle and contributed a hit and an RBI his first time up to bat.
Brian Martinez had two hits. Jacob Castillo, Kody Zimmmerhanzel and A. Crider also added hits.
“We were much more aggressive at the plate today,” Head Coach Mark Elder said. “That is what we want to do. The New Braunfels pitchers had a hard time finding the strike zone in the wet conditions and we capitalized on their mistakes.”
Lions vs. Lobos
The Lobos attacked immediately after the game began on their home turf on Tuesday scoring seven runs in the first inning. The Lions never recovered.
Crucial and numerous errors cost the Lions the game.
“Jacob Castillo came in to pitch in the second inning and did a great job for us,” Elder said. “We just made too many mistakes.”
The only silver lining for the Lions came when Steven Crider hit a homerun in the fifth inning with a runner on base.
The Varsity Lion record is 7-11. They are 1-5 in district play.
The Lions travel to Del Valle to face the Cardinals on Tuesday, April 1 and then to Kyle to face the Hays Rebels on Friday, April 4. Check next week’s Post-Register for scores and highlights.
See you at the game.
