LISD eyes redistricting maps

The Lockhart Independent School District announced on Monday the proposal created by the Redistricting Advisory Committee, and their plans for redistricting as mandated by the 2010 Census.

d a public meeting with the District’s redistricting counsel and demographer in which a redistricting plan was drafted and commented on.

The members of the Redistricting Advisory Committee (RAC) have completed the process of discussing and evaluation the options of the plan for the LISD, and have agreed unanimously to recommend the adoption of a redistricting plan.

Alan Fielder, who was chosen by the RAC to bring the recommendation to the board, stated that he wanted to make voting as easy as possible so that there were “as few excuses not to vote as possible.”

His recommendation was one voting site that would divide the four different precincts – this voting site location was determined by the largest number of votes in past elections. The proposed redistricting plan will have a minimal impact on Lockhart area-voters,  as only small areas were moved to accommodate compliance with Federal standards.

Concerned with LISD students’ health in athletics, the Trustees considered a revamped Concussion Protocol, which has prompted reevaluations of treatment and management recommendations from the high school to the professional level.

Each parent in the district will receive a packet of information and consent form to allow their child to participate in athletics.

In addition, any student involved in a head injury will fill out a “Sideline Concussion Assessment” by a physician to determine the magnitude of injury and will require a doctor’s release to return to play.

In brief business:

The Board recognized Lockhart High School student and 1st Lieutenant of the AFJROTC William Talbet, who received recognition for Summer Leadership School for his optimal extracurricular activities, leadership and SLS activities.

Superintendent Jose Parra presented a plaque to former trustee Chip Pittman, in recognition and appreciation for his years of service on the Board.

Also, the Bluebonnet Summer playground volunteer Cub Scouts received a certificate of appreciation for their charitable efforts of watering trees and shrubs as well as picking up trash and wood chips around the playgrounds. The Cub Scouts represent many elementary schools and are currently working on their World Conservation and Leave No Trace badges.

Members of the Evening Lions Club presented a check in the amount of $713, which the organization raised in three hours during their annual fund drive to help provide homeless and needy children with school supplies.

Tina Joseph, Alberto Perez, Benny Hillburn and Hye Brown have been nominated for Directors to the Caldwell County Appraisal District (CCAD) Board of Directors. A director must reside in the appraisal district for at least two years immediately preceding the date he or she takes office and must not have delinquent property taxes. An employee of a taxing unit is not eligible to serve as a director unless the employee is also an elected official. Voting will take place before Dec. 15, 2011.

The Lockhart ISD Board of Trustees meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Conference Center (Old Library) at Lockhart High School. The meetings are open to the public and parents, residents and interested parties are encouraged to attend.
