Norma Wilkins

Norma “Mawmaw” Wilkins, of Pflugerville (formerly of Lockhart), passed away peacefully the morning of Friday, Feb. 1, 2013. She is home with her heavenly Father. She was born in Nederland, Texas, on May 29, 1927, to the late Leonard and Olga Stele Van Marion.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Sue Wells and husband, Ricky; granddaughters, Christy Davis and husband, Chris, and Elizabeth Wells; great-grandchildren, Heather and Brayden Davis and Genesis Wells; adopted great-grandchildren, Tryston, Cole and Brock Davis, Carrie Turner, and Christina and Madison De La Torre; two brothers, Alvin and Nelis Van Marion; sisters, Betty Menard and Shirley Solis; and many other friends and family whom she loved dearly. In addition, over the past few years Norma has received the best possible care from her friends and caregivers: Sarah “Karen” Turner, Annie De La Torre, Martha Muniz Martinez and Alma Patricia Martinez. They treated her like she was their Mother and we thank them for all the love and care they provided.

Norma married her soul mate, Jay B. Wilkins, Jr., on Nov. 26, 1951, in Maryland. They shared 57 wonderful years and they spent their lives building memories. Jay and Norma moved to Austin and she began working in the office of Governor Price Daniel. She continued working in the Governor”s office during the terms of John B. Connally, Preston Smith and Dolph Briscoe. After 21 years of employment for the State of Texas, Norma took early retirement in 1979.

Jay and Norma raised Santa Gertrudis cattle on their beautiful hill-top ranch in Lockhart, Texas, for almost 40 years. They also grew and showed amazing roses. They were members of the American Rose Society and the Golden Triangle Rose Society. Both were accredited Life Rose Judges. While in Lockhart, Norma was active in her church, St. Paul”s United Church of Christ, holding positions on the church council and serving as Treasurer for the Women”s Guild.

Norma”s past hobbies included sewing, quilting, canning vegetables and fruits from the expansive garden and orchard. She loved to bake. She also enjoyed playing Bunko, Canasta and 42 Dominoes with her friends.

Due to health reasons, Norma moved to Pflugerville in 2009 to be close to her granddaughter, Christy, and her family. She attended Hill Country Bible Church in Pflugerville where she enjoyed greeting everyone each Sunday morning. She lived at the Heatherwilde Park Retirement Apartments for a few years where she met a lot of new friends and even a friend she already knew from Lockhart, Si Si Ridley. She was a member of the Red Hat Society at Heatherwilde. In July 2012, Norma moved in with Christy, which was truly a blessing.

She was a witty, funny, kind, caring and giving woman. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

The family would like to express heartfelt appreciation to the sincere and caring staff at Seton Main Hospital ER, IMC, ICU, especially:  Dr. Stokes, Dr. Lam, Dr. Ziebert, Dr. Hinze, Dr. Betts, Dr. Deaton, Chaplain Jonathan Bergman, RN Sholana, RN Matt, RN Rachel, RN Emily, RN Gus, RN Kieko, Holly from Palliative Care and the other nurses and doctors who comforted her and the family during this difficult time.

Family and friends are welcome for visitation at McCurdy Funeral Home, 105 E. Pecan St., Lockhart, Texas, on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at 1 p.m. Services to follow at 2 p.m. with burial following at Lockhart City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chris Davis, Brayden Davis, Daniel Nolte, Steve Turner, Scot Watson and Scoti Watson.
