Undersized Lockhart held its own for a half against powerful Pflugerville Weiss, trailing only by a touchdown, but the Wolves widened the gap in the final two quarters and walked away with a 42-0 shutout of Lions Stadium.

Weiss improved to 7-1 on the season, 5-1 in District play, while Lockhart dropped to 2-5, 2-3.

Weiss came into the game averaging 67 points per game in its four district victories, losing only to A&M Consolidated, 25-19. However, Lockhart found itself trailing only 7-0 at the half.

The Wolves scored their only points of the first half on a 2-yard plunge by Nicholas Johnson with 2:14 left in the second quarter. James Buchanan’s PAT made it 7-0.

The Lions couldn’t capitalize on its defensive stubbornness, as their four first-half offensive series ended with a fumble, punt, missed field goal, and fumble.

Things got worse in the second half as the LHS defense began to buckle against the Wolves, who made it 14-0 after freshman quarterback Jaxon Schad tossed a 2-ard touchdown pass to Adrian Wilson with 9:24 left in the third quarter.

Weiss scored on its first four second-half possessions as well as on an interception return.

Schad connected on a 57-yard touchdown to Daniel Berry with 6:01 left in the third quarter for a 21-0 lead.

Braiden Wooley’s 4-yard run with 55 seconds remaining in the third quarter made it 28-0.

Kadon Moebes, who was picked off twice early in the fourth period, had one returned 17 yards to pay dirt by Noah McPeak with 10:31 remaining.

The final Weiss score came with 8:29 remaining on a 6-yard run by Nicholas Thomas. Buchanan’s PAT made it 42-0.

Lockhart’s five second half offensive series didn’t fare much better — fumble, punt, interception, interception, and time.

Lockhart reached the Weiss 10-yard line in the final seconds, but an incomplete pass as time expired ended the hope of Lockhart avoiding its first shutout since Nov. 6, 2020, when Medina Valley beat the Lions, 7-0.

Nathaniel Gonzales did have a good night with a game-high 130 yards rushing on 25 carries, including a 9-yard gain on a successful fake punt in the second quarter.

Moebes was 9-of-25 through the air for 88 yards, 71 of which came on 6 receptions by Gage Deutsch.

Also, Lockhart’s Payton Jackson recovered a Weiss fumble caused by Malik Hill.

The Lions travel to College Station High School Friday for a 7 p.m. (30 minutes earlier than usual) kickoff at Cougar Field. College Station is 7-1 overall and 5-1 in District action, with its lone setback also at the hands of A&M Consolidated, 34-20. On Nov. 1, College Station will travel to Weiss for what is likely a battle for district runner-up.
