Alma Brewer Strawn, of Lytton Springs, Texas, passed away on Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, in Temple, Texas; two months shy of her 100th birthday.
Alma was born on Oct. 23, 1912, to Henry and Anna Brewer. She attended school in Lytton Springs and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in journalism. She taught school for 42 years in Lytton Springs and Lockhart. She was a lifetime member of Lytton Springs United Methodist Church (built by her father), where she was also the church pianist for many years. She participated in Extension Homemaker club activities and enjoyed cooking and preparing microwave recipes (even having been published in Woman’s Day Magazine). She also loved working in the yard, growing roses and pampering her magnolia tree. Another favorite pastime of hers was working crossword puzzles with her nephew, Jimmy. She had two daughters, Diane and Gail, and six grandchildren, Julie, Reagan, Rodney, Jill, Greg and Stacey. She left a legacy of grace and perseverance to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother and sister-in-law, James and Ernestine “Tiny” Brewer; her grandson, Rodney Huff; and her daughter, Diane Fariss.
She is survived by her daughter, Gail Peters; grandchildren, Julie and Reagan Huff, Jill and Darren Hoelscher, Greg and Debbie Fariss, and Stacey Moehnke; nephews and niece, Billy and Jimmy Brewer and Beverly Nelson and their families; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, at Lytton Springs United Methodist Church with Rev. Barrett Renfro officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Alma Strawn Memorial Scholarship at Lytton Springs United Methodist Church.
