Nettie Smith Houston

Nettie Smith Houston passed quietly from this life on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008 at 7 p.m. Mrs. Houston was a resident of Hays Rehabilitation Center in San Marcos. She was born in Niederwald, Texas, to Oscar Smith and Lena Sneed Smith on Sept. 2, 1919.
Mrs. Houston was preceded in death by her husbands, Rev. James Edwards Sr., Hilary Wade and Rev. James L. Houston; her par

ents; her brother, Ned Smith; her daughter, Mary Johnson; and her stepchildren, Roy Edwards and Bessie Dawson.
She is survived by her daughters, Gertrude Hamilton of San Marcos and Hilirine Lockhart and husband, Dennis, of Kyle; sons, James Edwards, Jr., and wife, Shirley, of Kosse, Texas, Alvin Edwards of Bremond, Texas, and Don Edwards and wife, Sherry, of Springfield, Mass.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many wonderful friends.
In her later years, Mrs. Houston actively participated in multiple communities as the wife of the late Rev. J.L. Houston who pastored churches within the United Methodist Southwest Texas Conference. Churches in this conference were located in Columbus, Luling, Hallettsville, Union Hill, Wichita Falls, Dale and San Marcos. In addition to faithfully serving as the pastor”s wife, Mrs. Houston proclaimed that she “loved being a member of the Jackson Chapel United Methodist Church choir and Bible Study.”
The family received friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at Pennington Funeral Home. A celebration of Nettie”s life was held at noon on Saturday, March 1, 2008, at Jackson Chapel United Methodist Church located at 524 Centre Street in San Marcos, Texas. Interment followed at Memory Lawn Memorial Park in Martindale, Texas.
