He Lived the Dream

With the untimely passing of Kenny Roland, it occurred to me that he personified the “dream” of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Mr. Roland first came to my attention, some time ago, through an article in this newspaper. He was reported to have spoken passionately on a subject and then took a stand as a single vote, being overridden

by the other council members.

When interviewed later, he basically said, it was the right thing to do, but showed no hostility towards his colleagues, who saw things differently. I so respected that and made a point of following his actions, which were quite refreshing.

He was all about speaking for others and not promoting himself. I saw him as a man of character, though I had not ever met him personally.

So it came as a shock to me this week, when I saw his picture in the newspaper and realized, for the first time, that he was a black man. How I missed that little tidbit, I do not know.

I truly saw him by the “content of his character, and not the color of his skin. I think he would have liked that!

An Open Letter to a Friend:

Miss Lilly, may you rest in peace. Thank you for supporting our community – for children having presents at Christmas time and for supporting the Pegasus boys, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Lockhart PAGA.

Whenever someone was in need, you were always there to raise money or supply some sort of help. You gave in many ways.

You always believed in working hard and with that comes success. Only at the end, your poor health really slowed you down.

If you look at it, you never retired. We will keep your memory alive by always giving, as you did.

God bless you, Miss Lilly. I know you are in Heaven because that’s where your heart was.
