James Massey
James William Massey, born June 2, 1939, in Alexandria, La., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 13, 2015 after an extended illness.
He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Albert Massey, mother, Charlotte Verone Box, and grandmother, Mae Stewart Box.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Ellen Plants Massey; six nieces, five grandnieces, and three g
randnephews.
Jim graduated from Bunkie High School in 1957, where he was senior class president, played forward for the Bunkie Panthers basketball team and was named District 3A All-Star. He earned his B.S. and M.Ed. at LSU where he was president of Lambda Chi Alpha and received his Ed.D. at the University of Mississippi in Student Personnel Services and Higher Education.
Jim was honorably discharged as a captain from the USAR after serving active duty in Germany. He taught at Pasadena High School, and was Dean of Students and Vice President for Student Affairs at Houston Baptist University.
Jim taught Sunday School to high school students at Mission Bend UMC in Houston and Bethany UMC in Austin. He was a member of the Houston Harriers and participated in numerous marathons until receiving a disabling knee injury.
He retired to his beloved hilltop at Canyon Lake and continued serving others by substitute teaching in Comal County.
Jim inspired and was beloved by many young people over the years he served as a teacher, coach, leader, and mentor. Jim had a passion for sports, a delightful sense of humor, great energy and zest for life, unparalleled strength of character, commitment to his faith, family and friends, and unflagging courage in the face of overwhelming odds.
His family thanks Chisolm Trail Nursing and Rehabilitation Center staff for their love and tender care throughout his illness.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Lockhart, TX on June 2, 2015 at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Alzheimers Association, LSU Tiger Athletic Foundation (www.lsutaf.org), Chisolm Trail Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, or a charity of your choice.
