Lion Harriers leave competition in the dust

The Lockhart Boys and Girls Cross Country teams kicked off the 2006 season this past weekend at the Lockhart Invitational.
The meet was held at the Lockhart City Park. A total of seven teams competed in the Varsity Boys division.
Lockhart showed why they are ranked number one in the class 4A division. Lockhart runners finished in line placing second through eight

h place. Lockhart won the team championship with just 20 points. Senior Jonathan Fitzgerald was the top finisher for the Lions. Fitzgerald covered the difficult course of 1.86 miles in just 9 minutes and 22 seconds. Senior Nick Yunkun finished third in 9:33. Junior Rory Tunningly was fourth overall in 9:36. Seniors Nick Alford and Clay Culpepper placed fifth and sixth for the Lions with identical times of 9:38. Sophomore James Bonn broke into Lockhart’s top seven for the first time in his career with a seventh place finish and a time of 9:43. Completing the top seven for Lockhart was Senior Sean Smith. Smith was eighth in 9:51.
Other runners who ran strong races for Lockhart included David Dihn 13th, Roy Garcia 14th, Scott Woody 15th, Ryan Gonzales 18th, Marcos Gonzales 23rd, Scotty Castanon 25th, Xavier Thomas 26th, Alfredo Maderal 27th, Christyan Gutierrez 28th, Cameron Peters 29th, and AJ Maderal 37th. In the JV division the Lockhart Boys had two runners representing the team. Sophomore Jose Medina ran a great race and placed second while Jonathan Farias place 12th overall.
The Lockhart Boys Cross Country team will be running in Wimberley this Saturday morning. The top seven Lockhart runners will be held out of the race however in order to train for the upcoming Texas A&M Invitational on Sept.16.

Lady Lion Cross Country starts on a
positive note
The Lockhart Lady Lions turned in a solid third place performance on Saturday as they hosted the Lockhart Invitational at Lockhart City Park.
The Lady Lions team score of 79 points was just behind second place La Vernia (67 points), as defending Region 4-4A Champion Dripping Springs won the meet. The third place finish included a solid victory over Gonzales (ranked #8 in 3A in the state).
The Lady Lions were led by much improved Junior Livi Massey (sixth place in 11:49), as well as Sophomore Aly Gonzales (12th in 12:07). Just behind Gonzales were Freshmen Jordyn Platt (16th in 12:20) and Alex Maderal (19th in 12:40).
The number five runner for the Lady Lion harriers was Mary Woody, who turned in a 37th place showing. Following Woody was Aly Daily (43rd), Shelby Ohlendorf (47th), Jannah Platt (49th), and Tera Alford (59th).
In the Junior Varsity race another pair of Freshmen were nothing short of impressive as Bianca Juarez placed fourth with a time of 12:50 and Kelsey Daily held on after a strong start to finish seventh in 13:21. Following Daily was Jade Ramirez in 17th and Leandra Garcia in 20th.
The Lady Lions will travel to Wimberley this Saturday for the Wimberley Invitational.
