Oleta Virginia Giles
Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all, passed away November 4, 2007. She was born in McMahan, Texas, on May 28, 1930, but lived most of her life in Austin and Lockhart, with a couple of side trips to California and Hawaii where her husband was stationed in the late 50″s and early 60″s.
She went from being a stay-at-home mom to a single mo
m, working hard to provide for her three children. She took a job working through the State Commission for the Blind becoming a proprietor of a couple of different coffee shops in Austin, one being at the Capitol Chevrolet located at Fifth Street and Lamar, which was the highlight of her career in the 70″s. She made a lot of friends there. The employees and owners made her feel very special and thought as highly of her as she did of them. When she retired from the food service industry, she stayed at home and cared for infants through pre-schoolers for family and friends. She enjoyed teaching the children their “ABC”s” and “1,2,3”s.” The parents of the children she kept thought she was wonderful and could always count on her.
In her free time she loved to dance country at the Broken Spoke, where there was always a table reserved for her every Friday and Saturday night. At “The Spoke,” she once had the pleasure of meeting country music singer Ernest Tubb, who performed his song “Waltz Across Texas” and dedicated it to her.
Oleta is survived by daughter, Ginny Miller of Austin; son, Billy Giles, Jr. of Leander; daughter, Melody Morgan of Austin; grandchildren, Ricky Hulsey, Michele Hulsey, Hayley Leverett, Johnathon Morgan and Matthew Morgan; great-grandchildren, Mikey, Monroe, Trey and Lexi; sisters, Ruby Voight and Betty Erhlich, both of Lockhart; and numerous nephews and nieces.
