Lion Pride Classic basketball tournament hits LHS courts

A total of eight schools from Wimberley, Seguin, Hays, Round Rock, Del Valle, Marble Falls, Dripping Springs and Lockhart participated in the 2007 Lion Pride Classic Basketball Tournament held at both the new and old Lockhart High School gyms on both Thursday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 17.
Tournament play for both the junior
varsity and freshman divisions began at 8 a.m. on Thursday. The freshman division had Hays go up against the Lockhart White team in the old gym while the JV division had Wimberley face Seguin in the new LHS gym.
The eight school teams played against each other all day Thursday and continued with eliminations on Saturday.
In the end, the results for the Lion Pride Classic Freshman Division were as follows, the Seguin Matadors earned first place, the Dripping Springs Tigers won second place, the Marble Falls Mustangs won third place and the consolation prize went to the Del Valle Cardinals.
The results in the Junior Varsity Division had the McNeil Mavericks earn the first place honor. The Dripping Springs Tigers won second, the Seguin Matadors won third and the JV consolation prize went to the Hays Rebels.
The Junior Varsity Lions started the tournament with a loss. The JV game between the Lockhart Lions and Dripping Springs Tigers started at noon on Thursday and ended with the Tigers pouncing the Lions 47-27 after a hard-fought match.
The JV Lions went on to play their second game against Marble Falls at 4 p.m. on Thursday. Lockhart bounced back in the second half of the game with great plays, sheer will and determination. Lions won 49-43.
The third JV game was played on Saturday with the Lions facing the Hays Rebels. Hays dominated the court from the beginning, making twice as many baskets in the first quarter. The second and fourth quarter were the closest quarters in the game with the fourth being the only quarter the Lions won by one point. The game ended with a final score of 85-64.
The Freshman White team played against the Hays Rebels on Thursday at 8 a.m. They lost and went on to play against Wimberley at 2:40 p.m. The Freshman White lost against Wimberley also.
The Freshman Maroon team started the tournament by playing against Marble Falls at noon on Thursday. They lost the game then played against Del Valle at 5:20 p.m. The Freshman Maroon lost to Del Valle.
The freshman Lion teams ended up playing each other at 10:40 a.m. on Saturday. The Maroon team beat the White team.
The tournament went on without any significant snag. It was two days of action-filled basketball. All visiting teams were gracious winners and losers. It looks like it will be an exciting season of basketball.
