Lady Lions place second at BBQ Classic

After opening their season with a win against LaGrange, the Lady Lion varsity softball team continued to dominate this weekend, taking a second place finish in the Annual Marble Falls BBQ Classic.
The Lady Lions traveled to Marble Falls on Thursday morning, making easy work of Florence High School, defeating the Lady Buffaloes 21-1.

lectrified, with Janie Juarez and Krista Law each hitting an out of the park homerun. Freshman Veronica Escobedo was two for two with a double, while Chelsy Martinez, Taylor Boedeker and Jamie Schulle had two hits each. Seniors Erica Griffiths and Amanda Oliva rounded out the hitting frenzy with a single each. Pitching for the Lions was sophomore Jamie Schulle, who held Florence to only one hit.
Later in the day the Lady Lions faced Liberty Hill High School. The Lady Lions struggled offensively and defensively, falling behind 2-0. With time expired and one last chance at the plate freshman Kassie Gaddis took ball four to give Lockhart a base runner. Karoline Pfefferkorn found her way on base with a shot to the short stop, while lead-off hitter Brady Stacks ripped a line drive into left field, earning two RBI’s and tying the score at 2. Escobedo swung aggressively at the plate, earning the game-winning RBI and a single into left field to win with a score of 3-2. Freshman Boedeker did not give up any runs from the mound.
In game three, Lockhart lost to Lake Travis High School 2-0. According to coaches, the Lady Lions simply failed to execute at the plate and on the field. On Saturday, the Lady Lions were rested and ready to play, defeating Crockett High School 8-1. Battery for the Lions was catcher Juarez and pitcher Boedeker, who struck out five and allowed only two hits. Juarez, Zaida Hager, Martinez and Gaddis each had a single, while Schulle was two for two.
In game two the Lady Lions showed no mercy, crushing Odessa Permian 8-2. Even the dreary weather could not stop Lockhart’s powerful bats. Escobedo hit an out-of-the-park home run and grabbed an RBI. Boedeker, Juarez and Gaddis each added a single, while Martinez was two for two. Shulle picked up a double off the center field fence to round out the Lady Lions’ hitting. Helping the Lady Lions with base running was agile and speedy Erica Griffiths. Freshman Amanda Capello played solid defense at third base, scooping up everything that came her way. On the mound, Schulle struck out four and gave up only two hits.
In the championship game, the Lady Lions fought hard, but lost 2-0 to Texas City. The game was scoreless until the fourth inning, when the Lady Lions had two crucial errors, which cost them dearly. At the plate, Lockhart faced a fierce pitcher with a great rise ball. In the third inning, Martinez tried to get something started hitting the ball deep to the center field fence, but it was caught with skill by Texas City’s centerfielder. Boedeker pitched an outstanding game, striking out five and allowing only three hits.
