In Loving Memory of
Fr. Leopoldo Guadalupe Reyes
December 12, 1940 – January 5, 2020

“Praise, Glory, Honor, Thanksgiving to the Lord our God.” Two things we will always remember about Leo, rather Leopoldo, is that he always wanted the best and that he was a generous person. Born the fifth of eleven children to Jose M. Reyes and Angela C. Reyes, he always wanted things done the best that they could be done (it was ‘Leopoldo’ not just ‘Leo’). In his childhood days at home and in the various jobs and appointments of his career it all had to be done in the best manner possible.
In his various appointments as a pastor in the diocese, he had to see that parish buildings were the best maintained and that service to the people was the best. Always wanting to serve others and help in any way he could, fresh out of high school, like other young men of his time, he became a member of National Guard and served for several years. Later he joined the religious congregation of the Brothers of the Good Shepard from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was assigned to serve in administration and also in the various areas where the Good Shepard Brothers operated and cared for homeless people. Wanting to do more in service to God in the Church, he was among the older students at Assumption Seminary in San Antonio and then ordained a priest to serve in the diocese of Austin. As a priest in the diocese, he volunteered and was given permission by the bishop to continue serving in the diocese and also to serve as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force, achieving the rank of Captain.
Whenever Leopoldo saw a need he did his best to remedy that need and help others. In early home life he wanted the best for himself and shared of what he had with his family. Family members and others can remember his sharing with them of the good things that he had. In this way he made others aware of doing and getting something better for themselves and not settle for second best. He inspired others to do better for themselves and not to simply accept whatever came their way.
Leopoldo loved his middle name of Guadalupe, given to him for being born on December 12, 1940, feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He celebrated this feast day with a nine day Novena and 5a.m. mass each year. His family is grateful for all the blessings from our Blessed Mother and from God upon their brother. The family is also grateful and thankful to everyone for their support and love for “Leo.”
Leopoldo G. Reyes passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at 10:01 a.m. at Ascension Seton Hays Hospital in Kyle, Texas. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Jose M. Reyes, Angela C. Reyes, and sister, Guadalupe Ybarra.
He is survived by his sister Lucia Reyes; brother Joe Reyes; brother Lonnie Reyes; brother Tomas Gabriel Reyes; sister Angela Elizabeth Reyes; brother Jon B. Reyes; sister Theresa E. Reyes; sister Veronica R. Darner; brother David R. Reyes.
